David's Daily Devotion for March 23

March 23, 2023 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, March 23.

On this day in 1743, Handel’s Messiah was about to be premiered at the Royal Opera House in London. The whole city was talking about this new work, and such a huge crowd was expected that night, that ladies were urged to leave their hoops (from their hoop skirts) at home.

But why was this “Christmas” musical being premiered during the spring? Well, The Messiah was originally written as an Easter production, not a Nativity piece. Of its three sections, only the first has a Christmas theme. The second focuses on the Cross, and the third on the Resurrection.

In that final section there is a lovely, lilting, haunting soprano solo that’s taken from Job 19:25. Take a moment to listen to that song this morning. Take a moment to let this truth speak to you, as you prepare your heart for Easter.

“I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that, in the end, He shall stand again upon the earth.”

Meet you back here tomorrow,
Bro. David,
