David's Daily Devotion for May 21

May 21, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, May 21.

Today at 5:30, the Men's Ministry of First Baptist Center will host a community fish fry. That reminds me of another fish fry, found in the final chapter of the Gospel of John.

This story occurs after the resurrection. We're told that Peter and six other disciples decided to go fishing. They fished all night but caught nothing. And then, at sunrise, they saw a stranger standing on the shore. The man called out, "Caught anything?" They replied that they had not. "Drop your net on the right side of the boat and you will!"

Sure enough, their net was instantly full. The Bible gives an amazing level of detail, telling us that they caught 153 fish. And in that instant, the disciples realized that the stranger was Jesus. Peter suddenly dove into the water and swam the hundred yards to shore. When the other disciples finally arrived, they found their Lord standing next to a fire. He welcomed them with the words, "Come and have breakfast."

I love this story, and the thing I like the most about it is the reaction of Peter. Impatient, impulsive, passionate Peter, who could not wait a single second longer to see Jesus. The other disciples were content to slowly row the boat to shore. Someone had to tend to that boat. Someone had to hold onto that net full of fish.

But don't you want to be Peter!

Meet you back here tomorrow,
Bro. David
