September 13, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Friday, September 13.
I have two friends here in Center, Texas who are celebrating their birthday today - on Friday the 13th. One of them remembers another Friday the 13th when he turned 13! He says 13 is his lucky number. Not many people would say that. Do you get nervous when this day rolls around? Enough people do that there's a word for it - parakevidekatriaphobia. Say that three times fast!
Truth be told, millions of people in our modern world still allow their lives to be directed by ancient superstitions. This way of living was even more prevalent during the time of the writing of the New Testament. The Apostle Paul encountered it in Colossae - "See to it that no one enslaves you through philosophy and empty deceit according to human traditions, according to the principles of this world, and not according to the Lord Jesus Christ" - Colossians 2:8-10. And he instructed his spiritual son - "Have nothing to do with silly myths." - I Timothy 4:7.
There are many theories about why today is considered unlucky. One is that there were 13 people at the Last Supper, and that Friday was the day of the crucifixion. I close with a positive fact. Any month that contains a Friday the 13th, begins on a Sunday . . . the Lord's Day.
Meet you back here on Monday,
Bro. David
