The Christian songwriting couple, Bill and Gloria Gaither, have produced so many classic gospel songs over the years - “Because He Lives”, “The King is Coming”, “He Touched Me” - just to name a few. But I think my favorite Gaither song is “The Longer I Serve Him”.
Bill’s grandmother was a strong Christian woman and had a tremendous spiritual impact on her grandson’s life. When she came to the end of her life, Bill sat at her bedside. Knowing that her journey had been far from easy, Bill asked if all the struggle had been worth it. She looked up and said, “the longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows”.
Those were some of her last words, and they made a profound and lasting impression on Bill Gaither. He considered the song that they inspired to be the inheritance left to him by his beloved grandmother. We’re left with these inspiring lyrics.
