March 13, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, March 13.
This Sunday I’ll be attending the 85th anniversary of my home church in Houston - Faith Memorial Baptist. It’s the church where I grew up, where my dad was pastor, where my mom was organist, where I had my first ministry job. Looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends and catching up. It should be a great time of fellowship.
“Fellowship” is one of those “churchy” words, terms from the language Churchese, phrases that are typically not used in everyday life. You’d never say to your office colleagues, “Let’s get together after work for a fellowship!”. But at church, we have fellowship groups that have fellowships in Fellowship Halls. It’s a word that refers to a social gathering. But the Bible uses this word in a different way.
“If we say we have fellowship with God while we walk in darkness, we lie. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from sin.” I John 1:6-7
That’s certainly not talking about a cookies and punch party! The Greek word that the Apostle John uses, “koinonia”, suggests a deep connection that’s based on our common faith. It’s a connection not just about sharing food, but about sharing our lives, our hearts, our spirits.
Koinonia... now that’s some serious fellowship.
Meet you back here on Monday,
David
