David’s Daily Devotional for April 28

April 28, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, April 28.

Do you follow auto sports? NASCAR or IndyCar or Formula One? Well, on this day, in 1887, the very first automobile race was held in France. The winner was a steam-powered car that reached a blistering speed of... 15 miles an hour! And it took almost an hour for enough steam to build up to power it. Miraculously, 139 years later, that automobile still exists. It’s the oldest car in the world. And in 2011 it sold for 4.6 million dollars. To our modern eyes, this car seems antiquated, primitive, and even a bit ridiculous - a racer that, at top speed, would still be legal in a school zone. I would, however, love to have one. I could sure use 4.6 million dollars.

This bit of history brings to mind the question - What will people in the future think of all our “state of the art” machines and products and practices? And I’m not talking about 139 years from now - time is moving too fast now - I’m talking about the next generation. The generation of my eight-year-old granddaughter. What will they think of us? Will we seem antiquated, primitive, and even a bit ridiculous? And what will their lives be like? Their culture? Their values? It’s a stimulating question. And, yes, it’s more than a little scary as well.

The Bible speaks much about the future, and often gives us reason to have hope. God gave these beautiful words to the prophet Isaiah - “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD your God.” And God gave these beautiful words to the songwriters Bill and Gloria Gaither - “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future, and life is worth the living just because He lives.”

Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
