May 8, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, May 8.
With this devotion, we complete our week-long series on mothers, leading to Mother’s Day. How many Bible moms can you name? Five? Fifty? Your list might include such notable women of scripture as Eve, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Naomi. However long your list might be, I’m certain it would include one particular woman, a mother named Mary.
But Mary, when we first meet her in the Gospel of Luke, isn’t a woman - she’s just a girl. In 2020 the average age for women to begin having children was 25. In the 1970’s it was 20. Your grandmother probably became a mother in her late teens. In the First Century Jewish culture, a girl could become betrothed one month after her 12th birthday. The betrothal period usually lasted about a year, before the marriage became official. And so, Mary of Bethlehem could have been 14 years old.
Mary was a young girl, but she had an old soul, a mature spirit, and a servant’s heart. When young Mary learned of God’s plan for her life, she sang a song of praise. We find the lyrics of that song in Luke 1:46. It’s known by the Latin word for “magnify.” Here are the words of The Magnificat. Here are Mary’s words.
My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior
For He has been mindful of the humble state of his servant
And from now on, all generations will call me blessed
For the Mighty One has done great things for me
Holy is His name!
A young girl with an old soul... and the heart of a mother.
Meet you back here on Monday,
David
