May 28, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, May 28.
My neighbor has four young chickens that have come to regard my front porch as something of a second home. Anytime I come out, if they’re in the vicinity, they make a beeline. At first, I took this behavior as a sign of affection, as an indication of their deep respect for who I am as a person. But then I realized - I’m just a food source. Those chickens are in this relationship only for what they can get out of it. These are selfish chickens! I meditated on this for a while, until I realized I was spending time thinking about my relationships . . . with chickens.
But then I was reminded that selfishness raises its ugly head in human relationships too. Maybe this has happened to you. Maybe sometimes you’ve been the selfish one. Looking back, I admit that sometimes I have. It’s a common experience. And when an experience is common, the Bible comments on it. Here are a few verses on relationships and selfishness.
*Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests, but each of you to the interests of others. Philippians 2:3
*Turn my heart toward Your truth, O God, and not toward selfish gain. Psalm 119:36
*Love is patient, love is kind . . . it is not self-seeking. I Corinthians 13:4-5
I’ll end today’s devotion there. Got to go feed the chickens.
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
