June 14, 2026 - VFW Post 8904 and community members gathered at the Senior Nutrition Site in Center on June 12, 2026, in honor of Flag Day.
Many who were attending the Senior Nutrition Site stepped outside to join in the program.

Larry Hume, Post Adjutant, remarked that although Flag Day is on June 14, they decided to have the program on Friday to allow for those at the nutrition site to be present.
Hume quizzed everyone about what has a birthday that is celebrated on June 14, and he imparted that the U.S. Army would be celebrating its 251st birthday on June 14, 2026. He commented that Derrick Roberts, VFW Post Commander; and Mary Roberts, VFW Post Quartermaster; who were both present are Army veterans.
The group sang happy birthday in recognition of the U.S. Army’s birthday.

“We’ve been doing this for quite a few years,” Hume stated as he reminisced about Pam White and asked the crowd if they remembered her. “When Pam died in 2014, that’s the first time we came out and so it’s been like 12 years.”
Hume stated that the VFW installs a new flag every year at the Senior Nutrition Site, “We’re here today to hoist a new United States Flag and we’ll let it fly for the next year. Hopefully we’ll all be back again.”

Commander Roberts was then invited to take on the honor of raising the newly installed flag.
Hume then led everyone in recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
