Patricia Huffman Smith Museum Hosts 5th Anniversary

February 3, 2016 - On February 1, 2016, the Patricia Huffman Smith NASA “Remembering Columbia” Museum hosted the 5th Anniversary of the opening of the museum and the 13th Memorial program for Columbia and the Crew of STS-107, along with the two men who lost their lives during the recovery efforts of Columbia. We would like to thank all those that came out to be with us on our day of remembrance.  We also want to thank Al Smith for his kind generosity that allowed us to open the museum to the public and a special thanks to those who participated in our program. We enjoyed visiting with all our guests and look forward to seeing them again.  If you missed the anniversary, we would like to invite you to visit the museum.  We are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Frank Hughes, VP for Education and Training Products for Tietronix, presented Hemphill I.S.D. Principal Mr. Marc Griffin and Mr. McSwain their charter for into the Science National Honor Society.  Mr. Hughes wears many hats.  He  is retired from NASA, is a member of the NASA Retiree Alumni Association, he works with Tietronix and with the Science National Honor Society just to name a few of his endeavors.  We want to thank him for all his work of establishing a charter in Sabine County.

We want to thank all of our visitors who stopped by this week for a visit. There are many things you can see at the Museum from NASA artifacts to items on loan by the families of the astronauts of STS-107 to items on loan from many other donors.  We also have an amazing gift shop full of really cool gifts. You will find items for children and adults alike, such as 3D space puzzles, space suit back packs, inflatable space shuttles, NASA ties & golf balls, space ice cream, coffee mugs and drinking glasses to name a few of the items. We also have a wide selection of shirts, hats and apparel.

We encourage our many students and schools, including home schoolers, to take advantage of our Digital Learning Network system. Through our connections directly with NASA, students can have a virtual experience with NASA personnel without leaving the county. Through these programs, students learn about subjects such as microgravity, food in space, erosion, weather, the solar system, robots, rovers, to name a few. Come out today and get your personal tour. Contact the museum to get your classroom set up for our Digital Learning Network or any questions or concerns; you can contact us at (409) 787-4827.

The hours of operation for the Patricia Huffman Smith NASA “Remembering Columbia” Museum are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We are closed on Sundays and Mondays, however, tours will be given by appointment only on these days.
