May 2, 2016 - U.S. Highway 96 North just outside of Center was the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Monday, April 25, 2016.
Center Police Officers and the Center Fire Department were originally called out to the scene of the crash as the northbound roadway was blocked. When the officers arrived, they began checking on those involved in the incident and when the firemen arrived they began to direct traffic around the crash scene.
The Texas Department of Public Safety was dispatched to the scene of the crash and when Trooper Sean Smith arrived he began his investigation. According to Trooper Smith, at around 8pm a black GMC Yukon driven by Lino Reyes, of Center, exited from a private driveway next to the Cajun Corner and across from Carpet One Floor and Home.
As Reyes entered the northbound traffic lanes, a black Volkswagen Jetta driven by Lindsey Bonner, of Gary, struck the left-rear quarter panel of the Yukon causing damage to the Yukon and Major damage to the Jetta. The Yukon came to rest in the middle of the roadway facing east and the Jetta came to rest facing north with the rear of the vehicle in the Cajun Corner parking lot and the remainder partly in the roadway.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene and no injuries were reported resulting from the crash. Reyes was issued a citation for fail to yield right of way and no driver's license.
Trooper Smith was assisted at the scene by Center Police Sgt. Scott Burkhalter, Officer Bobby Walker and Officer Andrew Williams.
