He spent many weekends at the Hallsville track and won numerous trophies over the years, something he was very proud of.

Margie Morris (Townsend) Thibert, age 85, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on February 13th, 2026.

Margie wore her self-described “ARMY B.R.A.T.” label with pride, having moved from the states to live in Europe throughout her childhood while her father, Master Sergeant Alton L. Morris, served and received two purple hearts in World War II and Korea. Initially married to Clifford Townsend, they shared three daughters who all received Irish names (Kelly, Heather, and Erin) in a nod to their heritage. Margie was a lifelong learner and a lover of language (she spoke three), arts and culture. Having earned her master’s degree and LCSW-ACP licensure, Margie advocated for social justice and equality throughout her career, which included 20 years with the State of Texas/TDFPS.

Margie was a founder of the first National Organization for Women in Shreveport, Louisiana and was the first woman to take a teaching position in her community within an all-minority school. An early interest in history, anthropology and the environment led her to become an active member of the Archaeological Institute as well as the Texas Archaeological Society.

Fine arts and music were an additional passion of Margie’s, and some of her life highlights included attending an Easter service at Ft Hood with Elvis Presley and becoming a friend and roommate to musician Janis Joplin at Lamar University.

In her retirement years, Margie developed a love for small dog rescue, often fostering all varieties and mixes of Shih Tzus and Lhasa Apsos. Later in life, Margie was able to have a brief but meaningful marriage to Ron Thibert, a musician and proud member of the Chippewa Nation, prior to his passing.

Joe Spann was born January 3, 1942. He did not appreciate being born so close to Christmas. He was born in Shelbyville, Texas to Charlie and Estelle Spann. Joe died peacefully in his home on February 14. He was surrounded by people who loved him. He took his last breath and was reunited with those who had gone before him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, extended relatives. He also had a reunion with his first grandson, Austin Glos, who died in April 2025. We know he had joyful reunions.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, from 10am-11am at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 11am. Private interment will follow at Spann’s Chapel Cemetery.

Being raised in the country he loved all things outside. He loved to fish, hunt, and explore. He loved his grandpa Ephram and they did many things together throughout his childhood, he never stopped telling stories about his grandpa.

One day Joe was in the car and he noticed some workmen outside in town. He said that one had a clipboard standing above the other man who was down in the sewer. He said to himself then and there, “I am going to be the man with the clipboard.” He did in fact become the man with the clipboard.

Being from a family with very little means he knew he would need help to afford college, so he joined the Army. There he developed his love of scallops because that’s what they ate every Friday for dinner. He served in Fort Collins in Colorado. Four years ago, he took members of the family to find the place where he watched a parade. We found the exact corner and he was tickled. After the army, he settled in Houston, Texas.

He married Frances Stilby and they had 2 daughters, Kelly and Tracey. The marriage ended and Kelly and Tracey moved to Center to live with Charlie and Estelle, better known as Mem and Pa. Joe had to work in Houston, but he drove every Friday evening after working all day to Center for the weekend. After football, on Sunday he would drive back to Houston to do it all over again. Note: He was a 29-year-old man doing this for his girls.

Those girls eventually became moms themselves, and Joe Spann (Papa) was never the same. His grandkids were the light of his life and don’t even try to talk about him getting to see 4 great-grandchildren and expecting another along the way. Family was everything to him.

Joe is survived by:

Daughters:
Kelly Glos
Tracey Walters (Conrad)

Grandchildren:
Hannah Brooks (Kyle)
Mandie Sullivan (John)
Bradley Walters (Hannah)

Great-grandchildren, the light of his world: Kamber, Hollyn, Olivia, Bexlee and little Briar who is on the way and we will meet in June.

He is also survived by nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

If there was ever a man who heard “Well done,” it was Joe Spann. He will be missed more than words can say but he died knowing that he left a legacy that will continue for generations to come.

In a divine display of biblical symmetry, her earthly journey began and ended on the same day—a completed circle of God’s perfect design.

A Legacy of Faith

She possessed a true servant’s heart, reflecting Christ’s selfless love through over 20 years of dedicated hard work at Tyson Foods, and later served as a cook at various restaurants thoughout Shelby County, TX. As a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and a friend, she left behind a legacy of faith that continues to move mountains in the lives of those she touched.

The Master’s Work
A faithful member of her church and a Redeemed Vessel of God, Patricia was known for her joyful spirit and her willingness to serve. Whether through a moment of laughter, her intentional presence, or helping in the fellowship hall, she was a joy to many. Her final days were marked by a holy preparation—what her family treasures as her "Last Supper"—including a divine foot-washing ceremony that mirrored the humble service of her Savior.

Lutherine Jones Sowell, 93 of Nacogdoches, passed away February 7, 2026, in Nacogdoches. She was born on July 17, 1932, in San Augustine to the late Leroy and Clarice Jones.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Laird Funeral Home officiated by Dr. Kendall McDonald. Interment will follow at Lower Chireno Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5pm to 7pm on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Laird Funeral Home.

Lutherine was born and raised in San Augustine County. She graduated from San Augustine High School and married Jack Sowell soon after. Together they had two children, Clarice and Roger. Sadly, Jack passed away in 1976. On November 12, 1977, Lutherine married Lenard Sowell, one of Jack’s brothers, and the two of them blended their families into one. Lenard had 3 children from his first marriage, Riki, Joe, and Lee Lenette. Forming a “Brady Bunch” of sorts, Lutherine and Lenard’s love for each other bloomed and they made a beautiful family together.

Throughout her life, Lutherine worked for Noble & Co. in Chireno and then later when the company moved to San Augustine, she joined them there as well. After that she worked in accounts payable for Holly Farms in San Augustine, which later became Tyson and was relocated to Center.

Lutherine was a talented person. She enjoyed crocheting and cooking for her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. Lutherine, or Boots as she was lovingly referred to, was known to be quiet but extremely fun. She was a godly woman and the epitome of Proverbs 31. Lutherine was a member of Fredonia Hill Baptist Church for 35 years. She had taught Sunday school for over 40 years. Lenard was a member of the Gideons, and she helped him in that ministry as well. Lutherine was a loving, compassionate, God-fearing wife, mother, and grandmother. Her presence will be greatly missed in this world until we see her again on the other side.
