John Stephens Walker Sr., 80, of Center, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2019, in Nacogdoches.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 23, 2019, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center.  The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 24, 2019, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Jerry Gannon and Dale Gannon officiating. Military honors will he held immediately following the service under the direction of VFW Post #8904. Interment will follow at Smith Cemetery in Center.

Mr. Walker was born September 2, 1938, in Carthage to Newton Flournoy Walker and Rose Mary Bozeman Walker.  He served in the United States Navy and later became a lawyer. He owned and operated John S. Walker Law Firm in Center for fifty years, during which time he also served as District Attorney for Shelby and Panola Counties for eight years and County Attorney in Shelby County for eight years.  Mr. Walker was awarded for his fifty years of service to the Texas State Bar. He was a member of James Church of Christ, where he served as Elder and Sunday school teacher.

Lucille Gray, 84 of Center, TX passed away on Friday, August 16, 2019, at Focused Care Nursing Facility in Center, TX.

Lucille was born December 30, 1934 to Rev. Jessie Gray, Sr. and Callie Hamilton Gray.

A graveside service will be held at 10am on Friday August 23, 2019 at West View Cemetery in Center, TX with Bishop W.C. Martin officiating.

She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.

Jimmy Ray Eddins, 79, of Center, Texas, passed away on August 17, 2019 in Houston, Texas. Born, June 18, 1940, in Chireno, Texas to the late Willis Harvel Eddins and Glendon Adelle (Parrish) Eddins. Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at 10AM at East Hamilton Cemetery with Bro. Fred Wilcox officiating.

Jimmy was faithful in serving his country through the United States Navy, Special Forces. He was a very generous, kind person towards others. Jimmy was a very intelligent man and worked well with his hands. He enjoyed repairing guns as well as practice shooting. Being outdoors was one of Jimmy’s favorite things to do, and in his free time he liked camping. Being in nature always brought him a sense of peace. Jimmy was known for being an avid baseball fan, especially when it came to little league. Nothing got him going like a little competitive baseball game. He was Baptist by faith.

Harold Church, age 44, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2019, in San Augustine, Texas.

He was born July 7, 1975, to Faye Church and graduated from Zavalla High School in 1994. Harold had been a resident of Colonial Pines in San Augustine since 2015.

He was a wonderful person with the sweetest soul who enjoyed all activies at Colonial Pines. Some of his favorites were music (he loved his rock and heavy metal music more than anything), making crafts (his absolute favorite craft was making wooden cars and painting them, he was so proud of the outcome), coloring, he enjoyed being read to, attending church services, he loved pet visits, loved drinking Dr Pepper and every chance he got he was going tomakr sure to get ice cream. He was able to recently take his very first outing to the zoo. He was given a wish and his only wish was to see the animals.

Visitation will be held Monday, Aug. 19, 2019, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home Chapel, 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine.

Following visitation his funeral will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Wyman Roberts Chapel with Pastor Gordon Vaughn officiating.

There will be no graveside service.

Mr. Cox was born November 7, 1927, in Shelby County, to James A. Lee Owen Stockton, age 80, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2019, in Lewisville, Texas. Lee was born October 29, 1938, in Dallas, Texas, to Ruby Lee and Arcadia Stockton. He graduated from Irving High School and was drafted into the United States Army in 1961 during the Berlin Crisis.

Lee married Margaret Robinson on November 4, 1972 and received his Master Electrician license in 1973. They moved to Center shortly after the birth of their first child, Aaron, in 1976 and started Stockton Electric Co. Their second child, Rachel, was born in 1979.

Lee had a passion for fishing and being near a body of water, landscaping, nature, and telling long-winded jokes. He combined his favorite hobbies to create extraordinary art in his younger years as an avid oil painter of landscapes. He was known for his curiosity, his dry sense of humor, and his tenacious and hard-working spirit.

Lee was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Center, the Center Noon Lions Club and was a Shelby County business owner for over 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William Edward Stockton.

Joyce Marie (Harkness) Ray, age 74, passed away peacefully in her sleep August 3, 2019 at Regent Care Center in Kingwood, TX following a lengthy battle with kidney failure and congestive heart failure. She was born February 3, 1945 in Center to Raleigh and Hazel (Williford) Harkness.

She was preceded in death by husbands Sam Ray in 2009 and George Laboyteaux in 2017, both of whom she tirelessly nursed through their own struggles with failing health. Joyce was also preceded in death by her mother Hazel in 1980, her father Raleigh in 1997, her step-father Fredrick Doyle in 1988, and her brother Bobby Harkness in 2014.

Joyce loved Center and throughout her teen years, she stayed at the home of her grandparents Homer and Daisy Williford in James community northeast of Center. She attended Center High School where she played clarinet in the school band. Joyce had many close friends from Center whom she remained in touch with throughout her life. She grew up around her many cousins and dearly loved them all. Joyce especially enjoyed the family reunions and homecomings and was one of the most faithful to attend each one throughout the years. She had a great sense of humor and everyone loved hearing her stories of growing up in the “piney woods”. 

Joyce loved being around her many friends, her brothers and sister, and particularly spending time with her children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and everyone loved her holiday fixings, especially her signature chicken & dumplings. Joyce will be greatly missed by the many folks whose lives she touched.

Roy Denver Byrd Sr., 70, of Joaquin, passed away Monday, August 5, 2019, in Center.

Mr. Byrd’s wishes were to be cremated and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Kendall McDonald, 75, of Tenaha, passed away Saturday, August 3, 2019, in Carthage.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, August 5, 2019, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at First Baptist Church of Tenaha with Bro. John Whitworth officiating. Interment will follow at Ramah Cemetery in Tenaha.

Mr. McDonald was born October 1, 1943, in Brewton, Alabama, to Guy McDonald and Audrey Lovell McDon-ald. He worked as a superintendent on an offshore oil rig. Mr. McDonald attended First Baptist Church of Tenaha. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and living life.
