Steve Boyd, 73, of Joaquin, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2019, in Nacogdoches.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, November 9, 2019, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 10, 2019, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Keith Keele officiating.  Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Steve was born on August 26, 1946 in Logansport, Louisiana to David (D.B.) and Maurine Farmer Boyd. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. He was raised in the Bethel Community in Logansport and loved traipsing over the property hunting and fishing the ponds around there. 

Survived by his wife of 30 years, Barbara Boyd of Center, Texas.

Waymon Edward Armstreet, 82, 82, of Houston, Texas passed away on November 7, 2019 in Houston, Texas.  Born December 22, 1936, in Shelby County, Texas, Waymon is the son of the late William Wayne Armstreet and Shelby Exa (Risinger) Armstreet.  Graveside service will be held Sunday, November 10, 2019 at 2PM at Duncan Cemetery, Shelbyville, Texas. 

Visitation will be held prior to the graveside service from 12:00 – 1:00 PM at Mangum Funeral Home.  

Waymon graduated from Strong School in Shelby County. He was a loving father, and enjoyed spending time with and taking care of his son, John, until his passing in 2015. Waymon worked in Houston, Texas as a dedicated fireman. Later in his career he bacame Fire Chief at Houston’s Station 19. When he was not working you could find him fishing on the Guadalupe with his nephew, Lynn, and some of his coworkers from his station.

Solon (Wayne) Ponder, 93, of Joaquin, Texas passed away on November 7, 2019 in Center, Texas. He was born February 5, 1926, in Ewing, Illiois, to Solon and Fleta Ponder.

Lenora Mills of Gary, Texas, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2019, at UT Medical Center in Carthage, Texas.

Mrs. Mills was born January 3, 1948, in San Augustine County, Texas, and was a longtime resident of Panola County, Texas. She was a member of Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

Her survivors include her husband, Thad Roy Mills of Gary, Texas; daughter, Deidra Swift of Evadale, Texas; daughter, Celeste Lewis and husband Harold of Joaquin, Texas; a son, Timothy Mills and wife Stephanie of Elysian Fields, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymon and Ercelle Lakey; and a granddaughter, Brandi Mills.

Visitation is scheduled for 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 8, 2019, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, located at 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine.

Karen Creech Thompson, 70, of Center, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2019, in Center.

A memorial service for Lita Karen “Cookie” Creech Thompson will be held at the First Baptist Church of Logansport, LA on Thursday, November 7, 2019, with visitation held prior to the service from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. 

Karen, lovingly known throughout her life as “Cookie”, was born in Logansport, LA on August 17, 1949 to parents Lloyd “Shug” Creech and Betty VanCleave Creech. She died peacefully at home in Center, TX on November 3, 2019.

She is survived by:

Along with several sister-in-laws, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Cookie is preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Thompson, her parents, Lloyd “Shug” and Betty VanCleave Creech, and brother, Danny Creech.  

As an active and devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Logansport for many years, Cookie taught Sunday School and assisted with the church’s children’s activities. She was lovingly known as “Aunt Cookie” and “The Candy Lady” by the children. Other ministry areas that she served on included being a member of the Building and Grounds Committee, Special Occasions Committee, and the Women’s Ministry Team. Cookie was an active member of the WMU, and was thrilled to travel with members of her church family to Kentucky to see and experience “The Ark” earlier this year. 

Always a dedicated worker, Cookie was a committed bookkeeper and office manager for Boles Enterprises in Shelby County for over 30 years. She was the owner of Austin Street Marketplace in Center, TX where she dealt in antiques, restored furniture, and produced beautiful hand painted artwork.  

Although Logansport was her hometown, Cookie was also active in her adopted home of Center and Shelby County, Texas. She served as a founding member of the Lake Area Art League, and as an organizer for the happenings at the Shelbyville Hill Festival for several years. It was her pleasure to support various other local organizations and civic activities with her skills and talents, always leaving her trademark gift of beauty with her unique flair.

Cookie woke her social media friends up each day with her “Good Morning” posts in addition to making those same lucky friends smile with her daily humor. She freely shared her God given talents as an artist and decorator with all. The lives that Cookie touched were indeed blessed and enriched by knowing this Godly lady that will be missed by all.

Dr. Thomas passed away Saturday, October 19, 2019. Dr. Thomas was born on June 9, 1942 in Haslam, Texas. Dr. Thomas attended schools at C.H. Daniels High School in Center, Texas; Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas; University of Nebraska at Omaha; and Nebraska at Lincoln. Dr. Thomas was enlisted in the United States Army.

Dr. Thomas church affiliation was Church of God in Christ. Dr. Thomas occupation includes teaching and mental health profession. Dr. Thomas was active in many organizations: Alpha Phi Alpha, Shriners, Mason, MAD, DADs, Softball Commissioner, Halfway House Counselor, YMCA Counselor and instructor of a mathematic department.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with a graveside service to follow at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, October 24th, 2019, at Reynolds Cemetery in Dreka, Texas.

Bruce was born October 31st, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Henry Thomas Bolton and Iva Dell Harris Bolton. He loved being a truck driver for Tyson Foods and received many awards during his career.  Bruce was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He was of the Christian faith.

Gail Joleen Abercrombie Keys, 65, of Center, Texas passed away on October20, 2019 in Nacogdoches, Texas. Born February 9, 1954, in Dallas, Texas, Gail is the daughter of the late Waymon Duaine Abercrombie and Laverne (Leach) Dooley. Memorial service will be held Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 2PM at Mangum Funeral Home, Center, Texas with Bro. Larry Chandler officiating.

Gail graduated from David W. Carter High School in Dallas, Texas. She married Ronald Keys and they raised two children, Kevin and Christy. The two were married over 27 years. Life happened and she later married Greg Frame whom has preceded her in death. Gail was loved by all, having lots of friends that she enjoyed spending time with. She never missed the opportunity to cheer her grandchildren on in all sports activities they were involved in. Even in the end as her grandson was playing football on Friday night she was listening for his name on the radio to cheer him on. Gail enjoyed sewing, and definitely had a crafty hand. She found great joy in spending time with her children and grandchildren as life allowed. Gail was a member of Central Baptist Church.

R.G. “Monk” Peace, 90, of Center, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2019, in Center.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, October 20, 2019, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center.  Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 21, 2019, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Dale Gannon and Bro. Jerry Gannon officiating.

Mr. Peace was born January 5, 1929, in Center, to James Booth Peace and Ella Mae Patterson Peace.  During his lifetime, he worked as a lineman, farmer, rancher, and owner of Peace Egg Farm.  Mr. Peace was of the Church of Christ faith.
