Funeral Service for Sergeant Major (Retired) Booker Gilford Coleman, Lawton, Oklahoma will be at 12 Noon on Friday, January 17, 2020 at the Union Baptist Church in Lawton with the Dr. C. W. Whitlow officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will be in the Fort Sill Cemetery under the direction of the Howard-Harris Funeral Services.
There will be a Wake with Viewing and Family Visitation at Howard-Harris on Thursday, January 16, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Masonic Last Rights will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, and also at the gravesite on Friday, following Military Honors.
SGM (Ret) Coleman was born May 26, 1929 in Center, Texas to Alvin Coleman and Edith Louise (Osby) Coleman. He died on Friday, January 10, 2020, in Lawton. He accepted Christ at an early age, and united with the Mount Zion CME Church in Center. He is a graduate of the C.H. Daniel High School in Center, TX and later attended and completed classes at Cameron University in Lawton. He married Odell (Lister) Coleman on September 6, 1953; to this union two children were born. His family became permanent residents of Lawton in 1962.
He enlisted into the United States Army on June 9, 1949, and retired as a Sergeant Major on January 31, 1973 after honorably serving over 23 years. He was a Combat Veteran of both the Korean War and Viet Nam Conflict, and completed other assignments in Germany, Hawaii, Fort Bliss, Fort Carson, Fort Chaffee, Fort Riley, Fort Sam Houston, Fort Sill, and Macomb, IL. His awards include the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Bronze Star with Valor for his heroism in Yulmak, Korea; the Army Commendation Medal; Korean Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal (7th Award); Viet Nam Service Medal; Viet Nam Campaign Medal with-Device, and the Over Seas Service Ribbon. Following his Military retirement he was employed as a Department of the Army Civilian at Fort Sill, and served in TASC and DOL from 1973 to his retirement from Civil Service in 1989.
SGM (Ret) Coleman remained active in Masonry since his induction in 1957. He earned the degree of Grand Inspector General; Commander of Golden Limit Consistory #133, and served as the Past Master of Rising Star Lodge #18. He was a member of Menes Temple #32, and also served over 25 years as the Treasurer for the Lawton, OK Council of Deliberation. Other affiliations included his being a Silver Life Member of the NAACP Lawton, Oklahoma Branch #6131.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Odell (Lister) Coleman; father, Alvin Coleman; mother, Edith (Coleman) Gardner; sister, Tommie J. Coleman; brother, Richard L. Coleman; and, his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Peggy Julian Perkins of Timpson, Texas, passed away at age 92 on Sunday, January 5th, 2020, in Timpson, Texas. Peggy was born on April 28th, 1927, in Dubbery, Louisiana to the late John Calvin Julian and Louisa May (Schnurpel) Julian.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January, 12th from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Taylor Funeral Home, Timpson,Texas. Funeral service will be held at 2:00PM on Monday, January 13th, at First United Methodist Church, Timpson, Texas, with Rev. Sarah Oden officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Timpson, Texas.
Peggy Julian Perkins was raised in Timpson, Texas, where she attended high school. After graduating from high school, she began her clerking career working at the Timpson train station at age 18. She then attended secretarial school in Houston, Texas, to further her career as a railroad rates clerk. While attending school there, she worked part-time at the soda stand in a pharmacy on Main Street Houston where she met the love of her life, Charles Morris Perkins. The two were married on February 23, 1951, spending more than 67 wonderful years together. While Peggy was an only child, she married into a family of ten brother- and sister-in-laws with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews which provided her with endless love, support and entertainment.
Peggy returned to work with the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1952 where she spent over 37 years as a rates clerk in Laffeyette Division of the Southern Pacific Railroad working in Port Arthur and Beaumont, Texas. Upon retirement Peggy enjoyed spending time with family and church members, as well as spending winters in South Texas with their many fellow ‘snow-bird’ Winter Texans from around the country. Peggy traveling with her husband extensively around the US and Canada visiting extended family members and their many friends. She enjoyed sharing fond memories from their many journeys.
Peggy was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Timpson where she and her husband were the first couple married in this church 69 years ago. She also hosted weekly bible study at her home.

Glynn Edward McLeod, 85, a longtime resident of Nederland, Texas, passed away on January 9, 2020 in Beaumont, Texas.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 12, 2020 from 12:30-2:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home in Center, Texas.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home with Tim Perkins officiating. Burial will follow at Biggar Cemetery by Mangum Funeral Home.
Glynn was born in Patroon, Texas to Lindsey and Verna McLeod on September 13, 1934. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1952. He married Betty George on July 14, 1956. He resided in the Golden Triangle and worked at Texaco for 42 years. Upon retiring, they relocated to Longview, Texas.
Glynn is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Ruth Spradley and Dorothy Hull, and his brother, Fred McLeod.

Memorial services for Mr. Bobby Bushiey, 76, of Carthage, Texas will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2020 at the Carthage Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Dale Reed officiating. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Hawthorn Funeral Home.
Mr. Bobby Joe Bushiey was born September 3, 1943 in Garrison, Texas. He passed this life January 4, 2020, in Longview, Texas. Bobby was one of four children born to the marriage of Joseph Lewis and Flozell Powdrill Bushiey. He was raised in Timpson graduating high school with the Timpson class of 1961 and attended Panola College. He married Mary Grace Hughes and together they had two sons and celebrated over 30 years of marriage.
Mr. Bushiey was a licensed electrician but spent his career as a local businessman and entrepreneur. He loved football, many sports, and time with friends. He was a people person and encourager to many young people. He is preceded in death by his wife; brother, Charles Bushiey; and son, Jeffrey Bushiey.
Mr. Bushiey is survived by his devoted son, Joey Bushiey of Carthage; brother, Louis Bushiey and wife Vicky of Joaquin; sister, Beth York and husband Mickey of Greenville; a granddaughter he cherished, Kelsea Nicole Bushiey; and one great granddaughter, Karen Lynelle Servin. Many other relatives and a host of friends.

Wilburn “Pete” Flournoy, 78, of Tenaha, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2020, in Nacogdoches.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 10, 2020, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2020, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. James Hall and Bro. Dock Lazarine officiating. Interment will follow at Buena Vista Cemetery in Shelby County.
Mr. Flournoy was born July 1, 1941, in the Patroon Community of Shelby County, to Arbie Alec Flounoy and Zelma Viola Wilkinson Flournoy. He graduated from Center High School and went on to join the United States National Guard. Mr. Flournoy retired after thirty-eight years from the Texas Highway Department. His hobbies included hunting, taking care of his cows, gardening, and most of all, playing with grandbabies. Mr. Flournoy was a member of Buena Vista Baptist Church in Timpson, where he served as a Deacon.

Patsy Hightower, 76 of Garrison, died Sunday, January 5, 2020, in Garrison. She was born August 12, 1943.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at Laird Funeral Home with Bro. Gary Forrest officiating. Interment will follow at Whitehouse Cemetery in Lufkin, Texas.
Visitation will be from 5-7, Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at Laird Funeral Home.
Patsy was born and raised in Lufkin and graduated as a proud Lufkin Panther. Following high school, she attended Lufkin Beauty College where she attained her cosmetology license. Patsy spent the next 30 years as a beautician in Nacogdoches, doing what she loved.
In early 1964, it was by God’s hand that she met a dapper young man, James Hightower. The two were immediately smitten with each other and joined their hands in marriage on September 5, 1964. They soon made their home in the Melrose Community in Nacogdoches County. Their family was completed with the birth of their 2 daughters, Janelle and Leslie. James and Patsy raised their girls with the longstanding morals and ethics they were taught and were very proud of the young women they became. Unfortunately, the loss of James in 1989, ended their 25 years of marriage. Patsy continued to show her devotion and unending love to her children and grandchildren. Her happiest days were spent as she was surrounded by those she loved the most. She happily spent her Monday off from work cooking lunch for her girls and would beam with pride as they showed up to have a meal with her each week. Patsy soon found solace with wonderful friends in her Sunday School class and enjoyed the memories she made with them. Their companionship filled the void after losing James and she treasured their company and friendship. Patsy was a very devoted follower of Jesus Christ and a dedicated member of Fredonia Hill Baptist Church. Her strong faith and love of Christ were the highest quality she honorably passed along to her children and grandchildren. She read her bible daily and strived to live a life filled with Christ, leading by example for everyone around her.

Mary Elizabeth Whittlesey of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Monday, January 6, 2020, in San Augustine at the age of 79 years, 1 month, 23 days.
Mrs. Whittlesey was born November 14, 1940, in Port Arthur, Texas, to parents Howell Bickham and Maxine Sharpton Bickham and had lived in San Augustine most of her life and was a member of First Baptist Church. Mary was a dedicated teacher with 56 years of service, the last 52 years at San Augustine Independent School District, where she was still a member of the faculty at the time of her passing. She adored her students and through these years as a teacher, she made many close ties to the student body and friends. Mrs. Whittlesey had received numerous awards and accolades during her career, including VFW Teacher of the Year and the Buddy Lowe Award.
Her survivors include her husband, Henry Whittlesey of San Augustine, Texas; daughter, Leslie Nichols and husband Terry of Nacogdoches, Texas; son, Joe Whittlesey and wife Jennifer of Center, Texas; grandchildren, Aaron Nichols and wife Megan of Nacogdoches, Texas, Carsen McFarland and husband Wil of Spring, Texas, Dylan Whittlesey of Center, Texas, Andrew Nichols of Nacogdoches, Texas, Lexie Nichols of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Mary-Grace Whittlesey of Center, Texas; a sister, Charlotte Davis and husband Mike of Hideaway, Texas; a cousin, Rebecca Cowart of Jacksonville, Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Roberta Louise Lyons of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2020, in San Augustine at the age of 79 years, 2 months, 10 days.
"Louise" was born October 22, 1940, in Stinnett, Texas, and had lived in San Augustine County since 1999. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Texas Tech in Lubbock. Mrs. Lyons retired from San Augustine Independent School District following a wonderful career as a teacher. She had also taught in Houston, Fort Walton Beach, Florida, San Antonio, and Germany.
Her survivors include her husband, Duke Lyons of San Augustine, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and John Barry of Melbourne, Australia; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Allison Lyons of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Samantha Barry of Brisbane, Australia, Matt Barry of Melbourne, and Sarah Lyons and Jake Lyons, both of Houston, Texas; brothers, Bill Womble of Dallas, Texas, and Dub Womble of Spearman, Texas; and sisters, Betty Helen Anderson and Kathy Womble, both of Lubbock, Texas.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Robert “Boy” and Helen Womble; and two sisters, Donna Nell Smith and Peggy Fondren.

Dan returned to Texas and attended Pan American University while working at the McAllen airport. Dan was working for G.A.C. finance where he met the love of his life Lana Sue Summers. They married in McAllen on July 8, 1967. During their fifty three years in marriage Dan and Lana Sue were close partners in marriage and in business.
A gathering of family and friends will take place Thursday, January 2, 2020 at Legacy Chapels, 4610 South Jackson Rd in Edinburg from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Graveside service will be Friday, January 3, 2020 at 10:00 am at Valley Memorial Cemetery in Mission, Texas.

G.A. “Bud” Hooper, 95, of Plantersville, TX passed away January 1, 2020. A long time resident of Houston, he became widely known as one of “Bud & Bud the Hooper Twins”, playing fiddle and real country music for 70 years. After retiring as plant supervisor of Koppers Company he continued to enjoy life to the full spending happy times with family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Edna, grandson Jason Hooper, twin brother J.E. “Bud” Hooper and sister-in-law Mildred.

James E. Higginbotham, 77, of Center, passed away Friday, January 3, 2020, in Center.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 6, 2020, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service.
Mr. Higginbotham was born March 24, 1942, in Gilmer, Texas, to Henry Woodrow Higginbotham and Avalene Mauk Higginbotham. He worked for Houston Lighting and Power for forty-two years and later became the minister at Center Church of the Nazarene in Center. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and visiting his grandchildren.

Leroy Verl Bowley, 82, of Timpson, Texas passed away on January 2, 2020 in Henderson, Texas. Born August 16, 1937, in Houston, Texas. Leroy is the son of the late Willie Verl Bowley and Geraldine Hazel (Ashley) Bowley. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 6, 2020 at 11:00 am at Springs of Living Water Church.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 5, 2020 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Taylor Funeral Home, Timpson, Texas.
Leroy graduated from Jeff Davis High School in Houston, Texas as a basketball superstar. He received a full scholarship and attended The University of Houston playing Cougar basketball. He later decided to transfer to Sam Houston State University where he completed his Bachelors and Masters in Education. He married the love of his life, Jeanette Hicks, on June 30, 1956. The two spent over 63 years together before his passing.
Leroy brought his family to East Texas in 1977 to accept the call of being a pastor. He taught Math in Tenaha and Garrison for many years while establishing the church. Leroy allowed the Lord to lead him in many endeavors, but the most rewarding was pastoring the church, Springs of Living Water, which was opened 23 years ago. He dearly loved the Lord and his family.
Leroy was a loving and devoted husband, father and Pepaw to not only his grandkids and great grandkids, but many others as well. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and a good game of basketball, but he especially loved spending time with his family. He would take every opportunity to attend his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sporting events as well as other activity he could be involved with.

Mrs. Cox was born February 28, 1930, in Walnut Springs, to Walter Randolph Yocham and Fannie B Dunlap Yocham. While her main occupation was being a homemaker, she also worked for Center ISD. Mrs. Cox was a member of Lone Star Baptist Church in Center.
