Lola Mae Jackson Rather, 97 of Center, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2019 in Nacogdoches, Texas. She Was born July 10, 1922 in Longstreet, Louisiana to Martha Mayfield Jackson and Nelson Jackson.

Visitations will begin on Friday, August 16, 2019 at 2pm until 8pm. Family Hour will begin on Friday, August 16, 2019 at 7pm until 8pm at Sid Roberts Funeral Home, 3535 S.E. Stallings Drive, Nacogdoches, TX 75961.

James Junior Cox, 91, of Joaquin, passed away Friday, August 9, 2019, in Nacogdoches.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 17, 2019, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center.  Interment will follow at Smith Cemetery in Center. Visitation will be held prior to service, beginning at noon.

Mr. Cox was born November 7, 1927, in Shelby County, to James A. Cox and Frances Jones Cox. He served in the United States Army during World War II and later worked for Air Control Associates in Houston for many years. Mr. Cox was an active member VFW Post #8904 in Center and was also an active member of the Smith Cemetery Board. He was of the Baptist faith.

Lee Owen Stockton, age 80, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2019, in Lewisville, Texas. Lee was born October 29, 1938, in Dallas, Texas, to Ruby Lee and Arcadia Stockton. He graduated from Irving High School and was drafted into the United States Army in 1961 during the Berlin Crisis.

Lee married Margaret Robinson on November 4, 1972 and received his Master Electrician license in 1973. They moved to Center shortly after the birth of their first child, Aaron, in 1976 and started Stockton Electric Co. Their second child, Rachel, was born in 1979.

Lee had a passion for fishing and being near a body of water, landscaping, nature, and telling long-winded jokes. He combined his favorite hobbies to create extraordinary art in his younger years as an avid oil painter of landscapes. He was known for his curiosity, his dry sense of humor, and his tenacious and hard-working spirit.

Lee was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Center, the Center Noon Lions Club and was a Shelby County business owner for over 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William Edward Stockton.

Joyce Marie (Harkness) Ray, age 74, passed away peacefully in her sleep August 3, 2019 at Regent Care Center in Kingwood, TX following a lengthy battle with kidney failure and congestive heart failure. She was born February 3, 1945 in Center to Raleigh and Hazel (Williford) Harkness.

She was preceded in death by husbands Sam Ray in 2009 and George Laboyteaux in 2017, both of whom she tirelessly nursed through their own struggles with failing health. Joyce was also preceded in death by her mother Hazel in 1980, her father Raleigh in 1997, her step-father Fredrick Doyle in 1988, and her brother Bobby Harkness in 2014.

Joyce loved Center and throughout her teen years, she stayed at the home of her grandparents Homer and Daisy Williford in James community northeast of Center. She attended Center High School where she played clarinet in the school band. Joyce had many close friends from Center whom she remained in touch with throughout her life. She grew up around her many cousins and dearly loved them all. Joyce especially enjoyed the family reunions and homecomings and was one of the most faithful to attend each one throughout the years. She had a great sense of humor and everyone loved hearing her stories of growing up in the “piney woods”. 

Joyce loved being around her many friends, her brothers and sister, and particularly spending time with her children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and everyone loved her holiday fixings, especially her signature chicken & dumplings. Joyce will be greatly missed by the many folks whose lives she touched.

Jerry Jackson, 76, of Nacogdoches, Texas passed away on July 30, 2019 in The Woodlands. He was born on February 28, 1943 in Center, Texas to WH Jackson, Jr. and Verna Mae English Jackson A graveside service will be at 2:00 PM, Sunday, August 4, 2019 at Oaklawn Memorial Park with Tyler Salonius officiating. 

A visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Mangum Funeral Home.

Jerry grew up in Center and graduated from Center High School. While at a school function in Shelbyville, Jerry met Diane Lynch and a lifelong love was born. On April 8, 1963, the two were married in a simple ceremony by the Justice of the Peace and remained lovingly by one another’s side until his passing. Jerry spent over 40 years as a dedicated electrician for General Electric until his retirement. Shag, as his family and friends would refer to Jerry, was a kind and simple man who enjoyed the company of others. He liked spending time outdoors fishing and watching sports. More than anything, Jerry treasured his precious moments surrounded by family. His quick wit with things such as “Hello, don’t hang up” will resonate laughter among those who knew him for years to come. The many memories shared together will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

Johnnie Kay Cassell, 95, of Center, Texas passed away on July 25, 2019 in Center, Texas. She was born on July 13, 1924 in Shelby County, Texas to Homer Kay and Ruby Bounds Kay. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at Mangum Funeral Home with Bro. Gordon Vaughn officiating. Interment will follow at Strong Cemetery. 

A visitation will be held on Friday, July 26, 2019 from 6-8PM at Mangum Funeral Home. 

Johnnie was born and raised in the Huxley community in Shelby County, Texas. She attended Ballard School. Johnnie was a devoted wife, mother, and sister. She married the love of her life, Howell Cassell, at a young age, spending many years together until his passing. Johnnie enjoyed cooking, sewing clothes, and especially telling stories of old times. She loved the outdoors, whether it was spent fishing with the grandchildren, taking them to the lake, or playing some basketball.

Johnnie is preceded in death by her loving husband, Howell Cassell; son, Bobby Joe Cassell; grandchildren, Jason Eli Redmon, Kenneth Leon Carroll, Flint Goings, Penny Hughes, Ricky Leon Goings; great grandchildren, Austin Underbrink, Antonio Aguilar, Michael Powdrill; sisters, Elaine Glenn, Else “Happy” Clark, Bertha Lee Davidson; brother, Louis Kay.

Pallbearers serving will be James David Carroll, Robbey Dutton, Jamie Carroll, Jack Tyre, Cody Price, and Dusty Lout.

The family is being served by Mangum Funeral Home in Center, Texas.
