The Honorable Bennie Charles Boles, 84, of Center, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2019, in Center.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 4, 2019, at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.
Judge Boles was born in 1934, in Center, to Bennie Paul Boles and Rosa Lee Lock Boles. He graduated from Center High School and attended Sam Houston State University on a football scholarship. He earned a Business Degree at Sam Houston and was a member of the 1955 Lone Star Conference Championship team.
After college, he served in the United States Army for three years. Later, he earned a teaching certificate and Master in Education, teaching and coaching in Center, Nederland, and League City, Texas. Bennie received his Law Degree from the University of Houston and was a lawyer for many years in Center before becoming District Judge for the 123rd District Court of Texas, over Shelby and Panola counties. He served four terms as District Judge and was a visiting judge in Dallas, Houston, and many counties in East Texas for many years afterward.
Bennie was active in the First Baptist Church of Center and was a lifelong member. He served as a Sunday school teacher and a Boy Scout leader for many years. After retirement, Bennie served as interim pastor for several churches and most recently was interim pastor of Truitt Chapel Baptist Church. He was a member of the Texas Baptist Men’s Church Ministries, where he helped and served churches throughout the United States and other countries, leading others to Christ.

Wilsa Putman, 79, of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2019, in Shelbyville.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 2, 2019, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 3, 2019, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Chris Collins and Bro. Mike Belgard officiating. Interment will follow at Rather Cemetery in Shelbyville.
Mrs. Putman was born October 28, 1939, in Winston County, Alabama, to Elder Gaines and Audie Lee Gaines. Her hobbies included sewing, crafting, cooking, and taking care of her family.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Leo “Paul” Putman; daughters, Genise Putman Saas (Ben) and Pamela Cole; sons, Keith Putman (Shonia) and Kyle Putman (Lisa); 18 grandchildren, Jason Franzese, Jessica Franzese, Jarah Franzese, Heather Saas, Kristy Carnes, Alissa James, Jodi Mullins (Jonathan), Haley Dillon (Kirk), Keith Putman Jr. (Angie), Kandace Meisch (Victor), Amanda Linthicum, Kevin Putman, Matthew Putman (Mariah), Adam Copelin (Jennifer), Jessica Greer (BJ), Cade Copelin, Maya Putman, and Elijah Putman; and 32 great grandchildren. Also survived by her brother, Meredith “Reedy” Gaines (Judy); and sisters, Deloris Verk (Larry) and Nina Waters.
Preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Audie Lee Speer; children, Denise Putman and Kevin Putman; grandson, Cole Carswell; and son-in-law, Carlton Cole.

Evangeline K. Eaves Crawford, 88, of Center, Texas passed from this world to that of our Heavenly Father on April 30, 2019 after a short illness. Born August 6, 1930 to Reinhold and Hattie Ketterling in Eureka, South Dakota.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 3, 2019 at Tennessee Cemetery in Timpson with Bro. Ozay Ford officiating. A visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, May 2, 2019 at Mangum Funeral Home.
Mrs. Crawford worked many years in the cafeteria at Tenaha Schools, where all the kids called her Miss Vangie.

Leah Moorman Guice, 79, of Center, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2019, in Tyler.

Ms. Guice was born July 17, 1939, in the Dreka Community of Shelby County, to Bro. J.E. Moorman and Martha Gary Moorman.

Mark Stephen Bowley Sr., 56, of Timpson, Texas passed away Friday, April 26, 2019, in Timpson, Texas. Born November 1, 1962, in Houston, Texas to Leroy Verl Bowley Sr. and Jeanette Arlene (Hicks) Bowley. Funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at Taylor Funeral Home, with Bro. Jimmy Nix officiating. Interment will follow in Corinth Cemetery, Timpson, Texas.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 30, 2019 from 6 – 8 PM at Taylor Funeral Home, 511 Ross Graves Dr., Timpson, Texas.
The family moved to Timpson, Texas in 1977 where he attended Timpson High School and met the love of his life, Kimberley Jo Fletcher. The two were inseparable and married January 26, 1980, and recently celebrated 39 years of marriage. They had three wonderful children and were blessed over the years with many grands.
Mark enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He enjoyed a good Cowboys game, deer hunting, and listening to his son and band perform.

Funeral services for Douglas Noble Lane, 81, of Tenaha, Texas are being held on Saturday, May 4th, 2019 at the Tennessee Presbyterian Church with Bro. Buddy Hall officiating. Interment will follow at Old Tennessee Cemetery where he is being laid to rest next to his parents, Yvonne and Emmet Lane. A visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Friday, May 3, 2019 at Mangum Funeral Home.
Mr. Lane was born on August 1, 1937, in Shelby County. He passed away at Solstice Senior Living in Grapevine, Texas on April 28, 2019. He was a retired rancher. Mr. Lane also served honorably in the United States Air Force for four years where he received the Efficiency Fidelity Honor for his exemplary service.
Doug loved to tell stories and was known for his quick wit and sense of humor; hence, his nickname of “Lightning Lane.” He enjoyed current events, reading several daily newspapers, and spending time with his longtime friends at the local hardware store every morning discussing the ‘events’ of the day. He was a loving “Granddaddy’ to Amber and Lauren and loved to refer to them as “Sugar.” “Granddaddy loves you,” he would always say, going around town during the “Beanie Baby” craze to collect as many as he could for them.
Douglas is survived by two daughters, Debbie Lane of Mesquite, Texas and Patty Hensel and her husband, Dr. Steve Hensel, of Grapevine, Texas; a brother, Van Lane; niece, Stephanie Hankins and husband, Todd, along with their children, Carly and Clayton, all of San Antonio. Douglas also had two granddaughters, Amber Beck and her husband, Jesse, from Beaumont, Texas and Lauren Hensel of San Antonio, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Steven Hensel, Todd Hankins, Robert Rowe, Jeff Hooker, Donald Hataway and Jesse Beck.

Brother Travis Lamar Hughes entered Heaven’s pearly gates Saturday, April 27, 2019, at 95 years of age surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Monday, April 29, 2019, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with Bro. Gordon Vaughn and Bro. James Goodwyn officiating. Interment will follow at Campti Cemetery in Center.
Brother Travis was born September 6, 1923, in the Campti Community of Shelby County, to Robert C. Hughes and Mary Keith Hughes.
He was married for 75 years to the love of his life Evelyn Bright Hughes. Together they were blessed with three loving daughters, Mary, Mavis, and Martha. He played the guitar and enjoyed singing at church. He served as pastor for over 45 years. His life ambition was to preach the gospel and lead souls to Christ. Before having a baptistery, he was blessed to baptize many in country ponds and the Sabine River. He never met a stranger and loved people from all walks of life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with family and friends. In later years, his greatest enjoyments were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was self-employed in farming and ranching, baling hay, dozer business, and a pulpwood yard. They also ran a country store in Campti for 10 years. He worked tirelessly in the community of Campti and even built an arena for roping that everyone enjoyed. He served as a Shelbyville school board member 17 years, and served on the Campti Cemetery Committee.

Nelwyn Mae Head passed away on April 26, 2019, in Garrison. She was born on September 25, 1933, to Kelly Ramsey and Emma Bowden Ramsey on her grandparent’s farm in the Old Center Community. She grew up in Tenaha, Texas, graduating from Tenaha High School in 1952. She attended business school in Shreveport and later moved to Houston to work as a secretary. She returned to Tenaha to care for her father and worked as a telephone operator.
She married Billy Head on May 17, 1958, and enjoyed 19 years of marriage before he passed away suddenly in May of 1977.
They had one son, Bobby Head, born in 1961. Mrs. Head worked as a retail manager and later as a healthcare professional. She enjoyed painting, playing the piano, crafts, her family, gardening, and growing flowers.

James “Bill” Childs, 82, of Center, passed away Friday, April 26, 2019, in Livingston.
Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 30, 2019, at Powdrill Cemetery with Bro. Fred Childs officiating.
Mr. Childs was born November 23, 1936, in Center, to Larry Lewis Childs and Hazel Ellis Childs. He retired from the United States Military, where he served in both the Marine Corps and Air Force. Living at the river and fishing were what Mr. Childs enjoyed and he loved his grandchildren unconditionally.

Funeral service for Howard Ivin Stokes, 95, of Nacogdoches, will be at 2:00PM Thursday, April 25, 2019, at Garrison Funeral Home in Garrison, with Bro. John McGuire and Bro. Hal Rymel officiating. Interment will follow at Cold Springs Cemetery in Garrison. Mr. Stokes passed away on April 22, 2019 in Nacogdoches. He was born on January 28, 1924 in Garrison, Texas to the late Albert Stokes and Thelma Carroll Hill.

Howard was born and raised in Garrison, Texas. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during WW2. He returned to his hometown and worked as a mechanic for many years. He farmed throughout life. Howard enjoyed gardening as his health permitted. His favorite past times were those spent riding in various trail rides and picking his violin while playing in the country music band he was a member of. He served many roles at Appleby Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist Church, while he was very active at each. Those that knew Howard knew he was a kind, loving, gentle person. He was that person that touched everyone he met in a special way. Howard was a Master Mason for more than 55 years.

Dianne Lynch Livingston was born in Center, Texas on September 16, 1950. She entered Heaven’s gates on April 21, 2019.
Her great ambition in life was to be the best wife, and kind of mother she never had, and have the close family devotion that she longed for growing up.
She married the love of her life, Ricky, at 16 years of age, and together raised two sons, Wesley and Bryan. Dianne was long time dedicated member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church. A loving mother and homemaker, Dianne was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, most especially for Sunday dinner. Dianne was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as grandma.

Calvin Samuel Foy Sr., 64, of Center, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2019, in Nacogdoches.

Dennis “Rooster” Shaeffer passed away on April 18, 2019 in Shelbyville,TX.
Dennis was a United States Coast Guard veteran, serving as a Tactical Law Enforcement Officer. He proudly served his community and his country doing supply, disaster, and rescue operations during hurricanes Florence and Harvey with the Cajun Navy Relief, Texas Native team, and BearPaw TacMed.
He had pride in his family and his community, serving to honor both during his service in the Coast Guard as well as during his time working urban disaster response. He had a great sense of duty toward those he helped, and made it his personal mission to help as many people as possible in their time of need, no matter the cause, while serving with honor and integrity.
He was a proud family man whose family was always on his mind as he was helping others. His heart was always with his beautiful wife and children as he served.
He was also a highly acclaimed bass player with John Cessac and the Texas Outlaws, and played because of his love of music.
Dennis was proceeded in death by his grandparents, Frank and Hannah Shaeffer and Nestor and Maria Labrada, his uncle Fernando Labrada and his beloved dog Dallas.

Kenneth Johnson, Sr., 75, of Timpson, Texas, passed away on April 11, 2019 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born on August 27, 1943 to William A. Johnson and Leatris E. Hicks Johnson. A private memorial will be held at a later date. Kenneth grew up in Port Lavaca, Texas and graduated from Calhoun High School. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he valiantly served his country in the Vietnam War. Kenneth thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his time hunting and shooting guns.

Walter Anderson, 73, of Joaquin, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2019, in Houston.
Graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 20, 2019, at Old Home Cemetery in Shelby County with Bro. Hollis Bass officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service.
Mr. Anderson was born January 30, 1946, in New Gulf, Texas, to Elmer David Anderson and Velma Dee Gaddis Anderson. His hobbies included hunting and riding horses.

Martin “Marty” Craig Tipton, 59, of Timpson, Texas, passed away on April 14, 2019 in Timpson, Texas. He was born on February 20, 1960 in Houston, Texas to Harvey Tipton and Beth Bush Tipton. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at First Baptist Church in Timpson with Bro. Dee Daniel officiating. Interment will follow at Corinth Cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the service on Tuesday, April 16,2019 at First Baptist Church in Timpson.
Marty grew up in Timpson where he spent the most precious and treasured moments of his life with his family. His most trusted canine companion that was always by his side was his dog, “Coco.” Marty had a passion for music and was a talented pianist. He also had in interest in old cars and in his spare time enjoyed fishing. He was an excellent cook and loved any time spent in the kitchen. One of his most admirable qualities was his heart for others. Marty always reached out to lend a helping hand to the less fortunate.

Audrey Faye (Furra) Taylor passed away at Twin Lakes Nursing Home in San Augustine, Texas on April 13, 2019. She was born May 21, 1930 in Nacogdoches County Texas to Grady and Ada (Byrd) Furra. She was married to the love of her life John Byron Taylor on April 2, 1949.
Funeral will be at Liberty Hill Baptist Church in San Augustine, Texas on Monday April 15, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation 1 hour prior and burial at Antioch Cemetery in San Augustine, Texas. Brother Robert Prothro will conduct the services.
Audrey is survived by a son John Taylor Jr and wife Mary of Port Neches, a daughter Belinda Coulter and husband Lafher of San Augustine, a grandson Henry Coulter and wife Cynthia of The Woodlands, a great grand-daughter Madison Coulter of The Woodlands, Special Friend Carrie Washington, step-grandson Jason Beck, numerous nephews, nieces and friends. Audrey worked at Texaco in Port Arthur, Texas for several years and then was a housewife. She was a member of the Eastern Star for 64 years, a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church and before that served as a Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, as an active member of the PTA serving as President for several years and later volunteered at San Augustine Elementary School for 5 years. Audrey loved her Lord and Savior, family, friends, birdwatching, bowling, sewing and shopping.
She is preceded in death by her husband John Taylor, parents Ada and Grady Furra, sisters Mavis Muller, Adelle Bobo and Bobbie Galloway, sister in law Mamie Ruth Shofner and nephew Melvin Bobo Jr, niece Karla Taylor, and great nephew David Bobo.
Pallbearers are: Walter Shofner, Ronnie Muller, Leroy Golden, Gary Muller, Jason Beck and Mark Bobo.
