Shelby County’s best “walker” Joseph Olenik, age 65 of Joaquin, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017 in Joaquin as a result of an accident. His pastor, Rev. Paul Silvey stated, “Now he’s walking on streets of gold.”

Services will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 12, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Joaquin with Bro. Paul Silvey & Bro. Joseph Rowe officiating, burial will follow at Joaquin Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

Joseph or “Joey” was born March 14, 1951 in Lake Charles, LA to parents, Edward & Temple Rose (Bazer) Olenik, who precede him in death.

A birth accident with forceps left Joey mentally challenged and epileptic. He attended public schools until the third grade; he then went to state schools and trade schools in Lake Charles, Leesville and Hammond. He made and sold decorative pillows from state to state for five years with his best friend from Leesville School. Joseph then took a drafting class at age 21 and learned to draw blueprints of houses. This showed more autistic traits. Joseph, along with his mom and younger sister moved to Joaquin in 1970, where his mom’s family lived. Joseph then moved to Shreveport where he ran his own lawn business for twenty years. He also bought and paid for his small home. In 1999, brain surgery alleviated most of his seizures and his family convinced him to retire and move back to Joaquin. He had walked all over Shreveport with his lawn mowers, in spite of the seizures and many more adversities. Joseph did not believe in giving up or giving in. He also didn’t believe people should stop exercising ~ so he began to walk all over Shelby County. Joseph was ornery to his “bossy” sisters, but he prayed for everyone and read his Bible every night. His generous and compassionate spirit and sense of humor will be missed by his family and friends. Joseph was a member of First Baptist Church in Joaquin.

A special thanks to his friends, Susie and Nathan and the crew at Subway in Joaquin, and DP and Nick and family at Executive Inn and Suites in Joaquin. They lived out this song to Joseph: “You’ve Got a Friend”. Eternal gratitude is given to Joyce and Steve Cockrell, Rev. Paul Silvey, Jesse the ambulance driver and all the brave group that helped at the accident Thursday night. The family would not have made it through without each of you. He will be missed so very much by many. He was loved and he loved people. But as he often reminded his family of his favorite scripture “We can do all things through Christ which strengthens us”.

Marjorie LaFitte Fisher, 83, formerly of Shelbyville

Marjorie LaFitte Fisher’s life was defined by her love for her Heavenly Father and His children. Her genuine persona, positive outlook, and concern for others endeared her to all who crossed her path. Her impact ranged from family members to coworkers at a major corporation to support staff at her skilled nursing facility and beyond.

Marj was beloved by her friends and relatives, and treasured by her husband Bob. Evidence of Bob’s enduring love for Marj is revealed by the extensive collection of greeting cards he sent her that she saved over their 45-year marriage. Described by her friends as gracious, caring, and appreciative, Marj was generous with both her time and financial resources.

Marj, an active member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church until prevented by illness, was a faithful front desk volunteer. A long-time member of the Tuesday Afternoon Circle, she served as circle leader for several years.

Marj went home to God on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2017. She was born Marjorie Gay LaFitte in Shelbyville, Texas, on June 5, 1933, to Sam LaFitte, Sr. and Ola Davis LaFitte. After graduating from Shelbyville High School in 1949, where she was a cheerleader, she attended Draughon Business College in Shreveport, Louisiana. While employed at Home Federal Savings and Loan in Shreveport Marj met and married Robert P. Fisher. After relocating to Houston, she was a long-time employee of Panhandle Trunkline Gas Co., where she retired in 1988.

At her job, Marj continually encouraged her colleagues. Her faith in their ability to succeed gave them the confidence to believe in themselves. That confidence transformed into fierce loyalty to Marj long after her retirement nearly thirty years ago.

Marj was preceded in death by her parents and husband as well as her brothers Foch LaFitte, Rexta LaFitte, and Sam LaFitte, Jr.; sisters Erdelle LaFitte Duncan and Lurline LaFitte; niece Rhonda Cox; and stepson Gene Fisher.

She is survived by her brother Harold LaFitte of Austin; sisters-in-law Dorothy LaFitte of El Paso and Gwen LaFitte of Shelbyville; nieces and nephews Beverly Bohannon of Shelbyville, Rex Duncan of Macon, Georgia, Sammy Duncan of Shreveport, Louisiana, Bryan LaFitte of Houston, Foch LaFitte, Jr. of Midland, John LaFitte of El Paso, Rex LaFitte of Austin, Michelle McDuffy of El Paso, and LaDonna Moore of Dallas; stepson Robert C. Fisher and his wife Sue Fisher from Village Mills; as well as numerous additional relatives and a host of friends.

Marj’s memorial service is Monday, February 27, at noon, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, 5308 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, Texas, lunch to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Presbyterian Children’s Home and Services, texas.pchas.org or 5920 W. William Cannon Drive, Bldg. 3-Suite 100, Austin, Texas 78749.

Terry Glenn Bailey, 54, and Pamela Hitt Bailey, 57, of Center, Texas, passed away together in an accident on February 15, 2017.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, February 17, 2017, at First United Pentecostal Church of Center. Funeral service for the couple will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 18, 2017, at the First United Pentecostal Church of Center with Bro. Andy Wilson officiating. Interment will follow Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Terry was born on March 13, 1962, in Center, Texas. He was a self-made man and rose to be one of East Texas’ most prolific entrepreneurs.

Pam was born on August 26, 1959, and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a degree in business. After the couple married on September 27, 1980, she quietly became the firm foundation of their immediate and extended family.

For 36 years together, Terry and Pam impacted their families and their community with their truly unique partnership which blended very different gifts. Although their tribe seems to encompass a thousand cousins, the Bailey’s thrived on togetherness and the joy of a close-knit family.  That philosophy carried over into their businesses where partnerships often involved family members, but even those who were unrelated became indistinguishable from blood relations. Terry was larger than life and could not help but to inspire. Pam, marvelously drew no attention to herself, while almost invisibly making everything in their complicated lives actually work. Terry caused every man to measure himself. Pam on the other hand, made everyone feel as though they measured up. To her, status and stature were irrelevant. Pam had a servant’s heart and a genuine caring nature. She made everyone she came across feel worthwhile.  Terry and Pam Bailey had a passion for putting family first and have now left an enormous group with great sadness and an even greater legacy to carry on.

Their survivors include
Daughter: Carmen Mackey and husband, Ryan

Son: Dustin Bailey and wife, Ginny
