February 6, 2020 - Panola College students Nash Coultas and Hieu Le have been named to the All Texas Academic Team for Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for community college students. Both will be recognized at a ceremony and reception at The University of Texas at Dallas on Wednesday, April 1.
Coultas is from Carthage. In addition to Phi Theta Kappa, Coultas was actively involved in the History Club at Panola. Le, from Marshall, graduated from Panola College and is now working on bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering at LeTourneau University.
Panola College Phi Theta Kappa faculty advisors nominated Coultas and Le, and they were among 100 outstanding students selected from 50 Texas community college districts.
“Members of the All Texas Academic Team represent the best and brightest students who excel in academics, leadership, and service,” said Emily Zabcik, faculty sponsor. “We at Panola are so proud of this accomplishment. This is the first time in my 10 years that we have had students be awarded this honor. I cannot wait to see what these young men accomplish in the future.”

January 31, 2020 - On Thursday, January 30 First State Bank & Trust Co. presented Jessica Pace, director of Institutional Advancement at Panola College, with a check for $10,000. The funds will be used to endow the Chris Dickerson Memorial Scholarship, honoring fallen deputy, Chris Dickerson.
Chris Dickerson was born January 17, 1991 in Marshall, Texas. He was killed in the line of duty December 31, 2019 in Gary, Texas. Chris graduated from Carthage High School in 2009 and attended Aviation School in Norfolk, Virginia while serving in the Texas Army National Guard. He graduated from the Kilgore Police Academy and served as a deputy and member of the Panola County Honor Guard for the Panola County Sheriff’s Department. On September 18, 2010 Chris and Krista LaNae Edge married and have two daughters, Kensley and Chelsey Dickerson.
“First State Bank felt that after the tragedy of Chris Dickerson, we wanted to make an effort to support the first responders of Panola County. We felt that establishing a scholarship with Panola College would be a great way to offer support for generations to come,” said Gene Giles, President of First State Bank. “First State Bank has always been supportive of first responders. In fact, we have several currently working at the bank. We felt that it was not only our responsibility, but that we wanted to do something for the community.”
The Chris Dickerson Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Panola College student. Dependents of Panola County first responder(s) are eligible to apply. First responders include peace officers, firefighting personnel, and paramedics.
January 29, 2020 - Panola College Associate Degree (ADN) and Vocational Nursing (VN) programs are accepting applicants until March 1.
VN classes will begin August 19 on the Carthage campus. Application requirements can be found on the Vocational Nursing page at www.panola.edu. Applications can be picked up and returned at the Carthage campus in suite 1100 in the Health and Natural Sciences Building and at the Shelby College Center campus in Center.

ADN applicants are invited to schedule a mentoring appointment with Katie Davis by calling 903-694-4019. Prospective students may apply to the ADN traditional two-year track or begin the ADN one-year hybrid LVN-RN transition track. Students admitted to the traditional track will start the program in August. Students who are admitted to the LVN-RN transition track will start in summer 2020. January 15, 2020 - Panola College has canceled the volleyball tryout for January 18th.
December 5, 2019 - Panola Volleyball will be hosting our annual Open Tryouts for unsigned/uncommitted seniors only Saturday, January 18, 2020 at the Panola College Fitness Center, located inside of the Charles C Matthews Student Center on the Panola College campus. Panola College is located at 1109 West Panola, Carthage, TX 75633.
Check-in will begin at 12:30 pm with positional drills and scrimmage play lasting approximately from 1:00-3:00 pm. There is a $25 tryout fee and all participants and their guardians must sign a Release & Waiver of Liability before they are allowed to participate. **All participants will also now be required to bring a copy of a current physical taken within the past year in order to participate. ** Panola Volleyball is asking all participants to please register by Friday, January 17th to better assist the staff in planning for the tryouts.

January 7, 2020 - The M.P. Baker Library of Panola College will host an exhibit of hand-turned wood creations beginning January 13, 2020 and ending Friday, January 28, 2020 in the Fay Allison Gallery of the M.P. Baker Library. An opening reception for the artist, Dr. Arnold Shrewsbury, will be held on Wednesday, January 15th at 2:00 p.m. in the Library.
Dr. Shrewsbury was born in Lenore, West Virginia on January 9, 1947. His education consists of a Bachelors of Theology, Masters of Theology, Masters of Divinity, and a Ph.D. in Theology. He has founded four churches, was a home missionary for nine years and a hospice chaplain for ten years.
Dr. Shrewsbury was married to author and fellow minister Janet Gail Gilman for almost 53 years until her death in February 2018. They have two children. Stephen of Sarasota, Florida and Kelly, who resides in Carthage. He also enjoys two grandchildren, Justin and Ashley Grace.
Following 50 years in ministry, 32 which were in the Carthage area, Dr. Shrewsbury has retired. He now has time to enjoy traveling, teaching the Bible, yard work and wood turning. He is a self-taught craftsman. The items he creates are varied with his favorite being bowls from exotic woods. He recently obtained wood from a tree in St. Augustine, Florida. The tree is known as “The Old Senator.” It is 600 years old and is located close to where Ponce de Leon is believed to have discovered the “Fountain of Youth.” A vast variety of hand-turned items will be on display including bowls, pens, vases, characters, a clock, and other imaginative works.
The exhibit is free and open to the public during the Library’s operating hours Monday – Thursday 7:30 am – 9:00 pm, Friday 7:30 am – 12:30 pm and Sunday 4-9pm. For additional information please call 903-693-2052 or email library@panola.edu.

Panola College music students at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas
January 6, 2020 - Panola College music students attended a Dallas Symphony Orchestra concert at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center on Sunday, December 8, 2019. The trip was made possible by a grant from the Panola College Foundation.
The annual Dallas Symphony Christmas Pops Concert featured the Dallas Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lawrence Loh; Reginald Smith, Jr. as soloist and narrator; Bradley Hunter Welch on organ; Dallas Symphony Chorus, directed by Joshua Habermann; and the Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas, directed by Cynthia Nott and Terrie Preskitt-Brown.
“It is inspiring to watch musicians get together and do what they are passionate about,” stated Loren Caserta. “I hope to one day be a part of something this great!”
Kacia Johnson said, “The performance was astounding. The harp soloist was remarkable and the soloist’s voice resonated within me.”
“This was one of the best times I have ever had!” exclaimed Maggie Sims, “I am glad I got to experience something so amazing!”
January 6, 2020 - Six Panola College Chorale Members were selected to perform in the 2020 Texas Two-Year College All-State Choir. The performance will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2020 in the Stars at Night Ballroom of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The performance is in conjunction with the Vocal Division of the Texas Music Educators Association annual convention in San Antonio each February.
