January 18, 2019 - On January 15, 2019, the Charles C. Matthews Foundation Board visited the M.P. Baker Library at Panola College where Dr. Greg Powell, President of Panola College, presented the plaque for the new Charles C. Matthews Collaboration Room. The Collaboration Station recently donated by the Board is located within the room and will be utilized by student study groups and for group projects.

“We are grateful for the continued support from the Charles C. Matthews Foundation Board,” said Dr. Powell. “Their generosity has continued to meet our students’ needs and help them to be successful in their academic careers.”

Two Panola Early College High School students, Samuel Brazzel and Tad Crager, along with Library staff Shay Joines, demonstrated the new collaboration station for the Board.

The M.P. Baker Library at Panola College had more than 45,000 patrons pass through their doors over the past year, and one of the most common requests the Library receives is the need for more study rooms. The Library currently has eight separate study rooms that are in constant use.

Students have an increasing need to come together as a group and work seamlessly on projects and through the donation of a Collaboration Station students can effortlessly connect with those near and far. Students sitting at the lower table will be able to connect to the monitor through their laptops and work simultaneously on a project. The station would be able to comfortably seat 10-12 students with the option to include students virtually as well.

As the working world is becoming increasingly more technological, students are expected to know how to efficiently collaborate on projects with co-workers, customers, and patients through technology once they enter the workplace. This station allows students access to the most current technology to prepare them to work with teams no matter the teammate’s geographic location.

In addition to the collaboration station, the Charles C. Matthews Foundation also donated 15 study pods to increase the number of study locations for the students. While most of the study rooms in the Library have seating for multiple students, the rooms are often in use by a single individual. Students are looking for a more private and focused space to study.

The study pods are private carrels that create havens for students. The surrounding walls give the student their own personal space to study, work on their assignment by laptop, or just generally find a quiet spot to unwind while preparing for their next class. The study pods are also equipped with power outlets for students to utilize putting the students’ worries at bay and giving them a greater ability to focus. The study pods do all of this without the need to build additional rooms. There are 12 single study pods as well as 3 duo pods that allow for small group studying.

“It is fun to watch the students discover the new study pods,” said Library Director, Cristie Ferguson. “The spring semester has just begun, and the study pods are staying full. The new study pods and the collaboration station are wonderful additions to the Library and will be well used.”

The 15 new study pods are located on the first floor of the M.P. Baker Library.

January 17, 2019 - An inability to connect on the defensive end proved to be a game changer for the Fillies, who fell to Tyler College 68-87 Wednesday night in Carthage. Despite a 10 point lead in the first quarter, the Fillies struggled defensively throughout the rest of the game. On the offensive end, turnovers seemed to be the difference maker.

Panola was led in scoring by Masha Adashchyk, who scored 22 points on 10-12 shooting. Two more players, Alicja Falkowska and Weronika Nowakowska, finished in double figures. Nowakowska contributed 12 points, including a perfect 3-3 from the three-point line. Falkowska contributed 10 of her own, along with 7 rebounds.

With this loss, the Fillies move to 8-8 on the season and 4-2 in conference. They hit the road to Bossier Parish on Saturday for a 2PM matchup against the Cavaliers.

January 17, 2019 - Panola was in another barn burner on Wednesday night escaping with a 66-64 victory at Paris. The win pushes the Ponies to 16-3, 6-1 in Region XIV play. After a first half that saw the Ponies jump out to an 8-0 lead, Paris came right back, and was able to tie it up at 34 going into halftime. Panola again pushed ahead, this time by double digits at 50-39. Paris again would come back and take their first lead of the game at 62-61 with 2:30 left on the clock. Panola bounced back and took the lead back. Up 66-64 with 20 seconds left, Paris had the ball and decided to go for the win at home. Their 3 point attempt with 3 seconds left bounced off the back of the rim. Kamari Brown skied for the game clinching rebound. Jeff Boyd led the way for Panola with 20 points. Lenell Henry added 10.

Panola is back in the friendly confines of AJ Gym this Saturday, January 19th. Region rival Kilgore comes to town with tip-off slated for 4pm.

January 14, 2019 - After defeating Blinn and Angelina earlier in the week, the Ponies capped a perfect week with a 77-69 victory over visiting Coastal Bend. Panola got off to a quick 8-2 start and were able to build a double-digit lead.

The lead would stay near double digits until Coastal Bend finished the first half strong and cut it to 42-37 at half. Panola would have another quick start in the second half building their lead to 56-42 with 14:58 remaining.

The game would never be closer than 8 the rest of the way. The Ponies were led by Tariq Simmons with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Lenell Henry added 13 points and 8 rebounds. Franklyn Penn chipped in 12 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

Panola is now 15-3 on the season and 5-1 in Region XIV. Next game will be Wednesday at Paris.

January 14, 2019 - A 19-10 run in the third quarter proved to be the difference in the Fillies 66-56 win over the Coastal Bend Cougars. Panola was able to survive the Cougars’ game long comebacks behind defensive stops and scoring in key possessions.

The Fillies had four players in double figures, led by Maryia Adashchyk with 16. Rounding out the scoring for the Fillies was Alicja Falkowska, Daryna Barcharova and Nyidier Riak with 12, 11 and 10 respectively. Adashcyk, Riak and Falkowska also lead the team in rebounding with 12, 8 and 6.

On the defensive end, the Fillies recorded 15 steals, with Weronika Nowakowska and Mikayla Etienne each collecting a team high of 4.

A 6-0 run in the first 1:20 of the fourth quarter by the Cardinals proved too much for Panola College. The Fillies couldn’t recover from the deficit and could not cut it under seven the rest of the contest despite valiant effort

The Fillies were led in scoring by Maria Adashchyk who had 18 points, followed by Freshmen Jolie Williams, Nydier Riak and Kellymat Zapata-Ramirez with 8 apiece. Wera Nowakowska, Daryna Barcharova and Mikayla Etienne each recorded score stats in the book as well.
