Victoria Baptista; Outside Hitter; Sao Paulo, BRA
Baptista has played a crucial role for Panola Volleyball as a 6-rotation outside hitter since her freshman year, appearing in 63 matches over the past 2 seasons. She was named Honorable Mention All-Conference her freshman season at PC, in which she finished with 187 kills, 385 digs, and 59 total blocks. This year, she has taken her offense to a new level, already tallying 193 kills for 2.10 per set, and finishing with 9 or more kills in 12 matches this season. Defensively, Victoria has continued to impress as a sophomore currently ranking 3rd on the team in digs per set and 4th in blocks per set. Baptista is currently majoring in Business with plans to continue her education and playing career at a university where she will major in economics after her graduation from Panola this May.

Morgan Currie; Libero; Bryan, TX
Currie has appeared in 62 total matches anchoring our floor defense as libero for the past two years. As a freshman, her 4.47 digs per set, 594 total digs and 24 service aces earned her 1st Team All- Conference recognition as well as the prestigious “Libero of the Year” superlative for Region XIV-North.  As a sophomore, Morgan is averaging 4.12 digs per set and is coming off of an impressive stretch where she posted 15 or more digs in 6 of the last 10 matches, including three 20+ dig performances. After graduation from Panola this May, Morgan will continue her playing career and education at a university where she plans to major in Architecture with dreams of becoming an architect or owning her own business one day.

Rachel Henderson; Middle Blocker; Ft Worth, TX
Henderson made her physical presence at the net early playing in a starting role as a freshman at Right Side. Last year she was third on the team in kills with 1.88 per set and third on the team in blocks with 1.02, earning Honorable Mention All-Conference. This year she has expanded her role offensively, currently 2nd on the team averaging 2.29 kills per set for a .343 hitting clip, and leading the team with 1.13 blocks per set. She reached her season high of 13 kills twice now, both in huge 5-game wins on the road at Navarro and Tyler. Rachel is currently majoring in Kinesiology with coaching aspirations, and plans to pursue her playing career and education at a university upon graduating from Panola this spring.

Ana Oliveira; Outside Hitter; Sao Paulo, BRA
A crucial component to Panola’s success the past two years, Oliveira appeared in all 39 matches as a 6-rotation outsider hitter before expanding her role to all include setter for the 2015 Regional Tournament after an injury sidelined the team’s starting setter. She was 2nd on the team in kills that year with 829 on the season, also finishing with 202 assists, 41 service aces, 39 blocks and 374 total digs. Her contributions earned her 2nd Team All-Conference honors as a freshman, followed by Region XIV All-Tournament honors highlighted by a gutsy performance that spearheaded the inspiring comeback down 14-10 in game 5 against Wharton County in the opening round. This year, she leads the team in kills per set with 2.33 on an impressive .336 hitting clip. She has also contributed 31 services aces and 300 total digs in an all-around effort to lead her team this year, highlighted by a Most Valuable Player weekend at the Lee College Invitational in Baytown. Majoring in general studies and graduating from Panola in May, Ana will continue her playing career and education in Kinesiology at a school yet to be decided.

October 11, 2016 - The age-old tale of ambition and greed springs to life with an eastern flair for Karen Sunde’s fresh approach in Kabuki Lady Macbeth presented by Panola College’s Drama Department on October 20th and 21st in the Q.M. Martin Auditorium with shows starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday and 7 p.m. on Friday.  Thursday night’s performance includes a talkback with the cast, crew, and director.

Japan has a long treasured history of the supernatural, ghosts, and warriors.  In 1959, Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood – the literal Japanese interpretation of the name Macbeth - was hailed as an international triumph when East met West in his adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.  Kabuki is a natural style for telling this story – the spectacle and traditions of Japan’s warrior culture fit as a glove for the Scottish Play. Sunde’s version focuses on Lady Macbeth’s role and brings dazzling insight into the culture and myth for this hybrid production.  This will be Panola’s entry into the KCACTF (Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival) on October 26 at San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas. KCACTF is a national theatre program involving 20,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide annually. For 46 years, the organization has served as a catalyst in improving the quality of college theater in the United States.  KCACTF has grown into a network of more than 700 academic institutions throughout the country.  KCACTF offers scholarship opportunities to students in all areas of theatre including acting, design, directing, playwriting, and more.  The primary goal is to encourage, recognize, and celebrate the finest and most diverse work produced in university and college theater programs and provide opportunities for participants to develop their theatre skills and insight; and achieve professionalism

October 10, 2016 - The Panola College rodeo team traveled to Uvalde, TX this weekend for the 2nd on 10 southern region rodeos.

Freshman, Travis Chapman won his event of bareback riding with two great rides. Chapman scored 72 points on his first horse and won 2nd in the long go round. Travis followed that ride with a 73 point short go ride to clench the title on two head. Travis is from Spurger, TX, and as a freshman has helped his team and his regional standings by placing in his first two college rodeos. Travis will by all means be a contender for the regional championship and a qualifier for the college finals.

Canadian bareback rider Bailey Plaisier made an outstanding ride in the first round to earn a 76 point score. The ride was good enough to win 1st in the long go and help his team gather very important team points. Bailey drew a very rank horse in the short go round, a round where the top ten in each event come back for a shot at the average title, and was buck off in a very rough position. Bailey suffered two broken bones in his back and will be out of competition for some time. Bailey is a key player on our team. He will be missed and it will be a hard spot to fill, but he will hopefully be back in time to make his goal of a college national finals qualification.

Logan Cook placed in the saddlebronc riding with a 2nd place finish in both rounds and in the short go round. Logan earned himself very valuable points for the team as well as individual points that will help increase his chances at his first of many college finals qualifications. Logan is one of the few cowboys to compete on both ends of the arena, meaning in the rough stock and the timed events as well. Cook has had a huge impact on our team and will continue to grow to be a vital part of our success.

Caleb Cogbill is becoming a regular in the steer wrestling. Caleb did not place super high but, he completed a super task. Caleb threw his first steer in 7.8 seconds, fast enough to make the short round but not fast enough to earn team points. Cogbill drew a steer in the short round that two other talented cowboys had run and where unable to get a time on, because of his strength and run. Caleb, full of grit like always, was able to down the steer in 7.1 seconds. The run was good enough to place in the short go and earn very important team points. Efforts like that of Caleb’s are what defines our team and defines the heart of a true cowboy.

Sophomore barrel racer, Abby Phillips, is ready to make her statement in college rodeo. Abby and her horse, Fame, did just that this weekend. The first run they put together was a 17.27 second run, good enough for 7th place in the long go and a shot at Saturday night’s short go. Fame and Abby where on their game in the short round posting a time of 16.8 seconds, making it the second fastest run of the weekend. Abby is a crucial part of this team and we expect to be hearing a lot from her as the season continues.

The Panola College Ponies teams ended up in good standings after all the dust settled, Panola men’s finished 4th, while the women’s team finished 6th. The Ponies will be back in action in Pittsburg, TX, October 21-22 for the NETCC annual rodeo.

October 10, 2016 - Fourth-ranked Panola College opened their four-day road trip Wednesday night with a 5 set victory over Navarro College (23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 15-6). Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Henderson paced the offense with 13 kills, sophomore outside Ana Oliveira added 11, sophomore outside Victoria Baptista and freshman right side Jaqueline da Silva chipped in 9, and freshman right side Kaitlyn Adams picked up 8. Defensively, sophomore libero Morgan Currie led the way with 27 digs, Victoria Baptista racked up 19, and freshman setter Cayman Sutton added 12. Sutton also dished out 28 assists in the victory.

The following day Panola traveled to Brenham to take on host Blinn College in the opening match of the Applebees Classic.  Once again it took 5 sets for the Fillies to claim victory (25-13, 25-11, 23-25, 16-25, 15-6). Victoria Baptista led with 12 kills, Kaitlyn Adams and Jaqueline da Silva chipped in 7, and Rachel Henderson added 6. Defensively, several Fillies made key contributions with four players in double-digit digs. Morgan Currie led with 16, Baptista tallied 15, while freshman setter Kinly Carter and da Silva each added 13. Carter also picked up 19 assists and Cayman Sutton dished out 16.

The Fillies turned it up a notch Friday morning to sweep Temple College (25-17, 25-17, 25-19). Baptista came up big again, leading with 9 kills and 5 blocks. Henderson added 7 kills and 3 blocks. Sutton dished out 10 assists with Carter adding 8. Once again, Currie led the defense with 13 digs while Ana Oliveira added 6 digs and 4 aces.

In what proved to be the marquee matchup of the weekend, PC defeated the 2nd-ranked team in the nation, Iowa Western, in a thrilling 5-set match (25-22, 25-23, 14-25, 20-25, 21-19). Playing their fourth match in three days, the victory was a complete team effort with several Fillies stepping up in crucial moments. Oliveira and da Silva paced the offense with 13 kills apiece, Henderson racked up 11, Baptista added 9, and Adams chipped in 7. The scrappy defensive play of Panola proved to be the difference with 5 players racking up double-digit digs. Currie anchored the floor with 24 digs, Baptista picked up 21, Oliveira chipped in 14, while da Silva and Carter added 10 each. Sutton and Carter came up big for the Fillies dishing out 30 and 25 assists apiece.

PC capped off its final match of the weekend with a sweep of DII 6th-ranked Central Illinois (25-13, 25-10, 26-24). Baptista and Henderson paced the offense with 8 and 7 kills, respectively, and freshman right side Melanie Casteel had a break out match with 5 kills and 10 digs. Baptista dominated the net with 5 blocks and Henderson added 3. Da Silva led the defense with 11 digs, and defensive specialist Camie Copeland chipped in 10. Kinly Carter dished out 14 assists and Sutton added 8.

With another undefeated weekend, Panola College Volleyball improved to 25-2 overall and Head Coach Amber McCray picked up her 100th career victory Thursday night against Blinn College. The Fillies will return to Region XIV-North play Wednesday with a road match against Tyler Junior College. First serve is set for 7 pm.

October 5, 2016 - The B.F. and Mary Payne Fund for the Preservation of Texas Culture is proud to sponsor the exhibition currently on display in the M.P. Baker Library at Panola College. The exhibit is organized by Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

In “Working Hands,” Rick Williams captures images of workers and work places in three diverse industries that constitute the three pillars of the Texas economy: ranching, oil and technology.  These 40 finely detailed photographs, along with supplementary print and video resources, contribute to an understanding of the workers who reshaped the landscape from boundless prairie to ranches, farms, towns and cities.  Williams’ images evoke a powerful sense of what it must feel like to engage in the work depicted, as well as the unique character each industry brings to the Texas landscape.

Humanities Texas develops and supports diverse programs across the state, including lectures, oral history projects, teacher institutes, traveling exhibitions and documentary films. For more information, please visit Humanities Texas online at
