Four of Shelby County’s five varsity football teams gained district wins last week.

The Center Roughriders won on the road over the Bullard Panthers by a 40-33 score. The Roughriders now stand at 6-3 overall and they have a 4-2 District 8 4A-2 record. Next Friday, November 3, 2023 the ‘Riders will host the Brownsboro Bears at Center ISD for their final District 8 contest at 7:30pm in Roughriders Stadium. The Bears are 5-4 overall and 1-4 in district, they lost 48-20 to the Rusk Eagles last week.

The Joaquin Rams improved their season mark to 2-7 and their District 11 2A-1 moved to 2-4, with a 43-40 win over the West Sabine Tigers. The Rams have a bye for the final week of the regular season.

The Shelbyville Dragons are 6-2, 3-2 in District 11 2A-1 after a 61-0 loss to the Timpson Bears. The Dragons will travel to West Sabine on Friday, November 3 for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Tigers Stadium. The Timpson Bears are 9-0 and 5-0 in District 11. After the win over Shelbyville the Bears will host the (9-0, 5-0) Garrison Bulldogs on Friday at 7 p.m. This year’s “Battle of the Attoyac River” will be for the district title and for the #1 district playoff seed. Garrison beat San Augustine by a 58-10 score last week.

The Tenaha Tigers are 7-2 and 4-0 in District 10 2A-2 after winning at Mount Enterprise over the Wildcats by a 36-34 score. The Tigers will host the Overton Mustangs on Friday, November 3 at 7 p.m. the Mustangs defeated the Carlisle Indians last week by a 38-14 score.

Bullard Panthers Stadium on Friday, October 27, 2023 –

The Center Roughriders varsity football team never trailed in their 40-33 road win over the Bullard Panthers on Friday. The win gives Center a 6-3 overall record and a 3-2 District 8 4A-2 standing with a single game left in the regular season.

The Roughriders got on the scoreboard first when Emonte Cash Cross capped a 70-yard scoring drive at the 10:24 mark with a pass to Lance Wilburn that went 44-yards for a touchdown. Carlos Hernandez added on an extra point kick which gave CHS an early 7-0 point lead.

Bullard’s first offensive drive stalled and they turned the ball over on downs to Center at their 25-yardline. Center drove the ball down to the Panther’s 15-yardline and on fourth down with two yards to go they elected to send in Hernandez who nailed a 26-yard field goal. Center led 10-0 with 3:03 left in the first period.

Bullard’s next drive stalled and they turned the ball over to Center at the ‘Riders 30-yardline. The ‘Riders drove the ball into Bullard territory where Kaden Dixon scored another Roughriders touchdown on first and goal at the Panther’s 1-yardline with just 50 seconds remaining in the first stanza. Another Hernandez kick gave CHS a 17-0 advantage.

Bullard got on the scoreboard when Logan Smith picked off a Center pass and returned it to the Center 35-yardline. With 8:24 left in the second period Panther Chase Randall scored the first Bullard touchdown on a 13-yard scoring run. A David Wilson extra point kick cut the CHS lead to 17-7.

Center went on a 72-yard scoring drive and Dixon scored his second touchdown at the 9:51 mark with 5:45 left in the second period. Hernadez added an extra point kick and Center led 24-7. A Da’Calvion Edwards 10-yard scoring run with 2:55 left in the frame gave Center a 30-7 lead.

Panther Quasy Warren scored Bullard’s second touchdown with 1:16 left in the second period to cut Center’s lead to 30-14. Hernandez put CHS up 33-14 when he booted a 36-yard field goal with just 2 seconds remaining before halftime.

Early in the third quarter Ayden Barrett hit Clifford Douglass for a 70-yard score which helped BHS pull to within 33-20 with 11:50 left in the third frame.

Dixon scored on a 17-yard touchdown run which gave the “Riders a 40-20 lead with 9:51 left in the third quarter.

Crew Bowman scored a touchdown with 3:28 left in the fourth period but the extra point attempt failed. CHS led 40-26. Bowman hit Randall for a 7-yard touchdown with just 1:33 left in the contest and Wilson’s subsequent extra point kick proved to be the game’s final. Center’s defense held Bullard in check the remainder of the contest and CHS earned the 40-33 win.

October 27, 2023 - Shelbyville Volleyball will be playing Overton for the 1st round of playoffs at Panola College in Carthage at 7:30pm, October 31, 2023. Shelbyville is the Visiting team. No passes will be accepted and ticket prices are $5 for everyone.

October 26, 2023 - For tickets tonight, October 26 to the Shelbyville Versus Timpson junior high game in Timpson, you can either purchase tickets online or pay at the gate with a debit or credit card.

October 24, 2023 - Two Shelby County Cross Country teams represented their home towns well by advancing to the State Championship on Tuesday, October 24 at Kate Barr-Ross Park in Huntsville, Texas in the UIL Region III 2A Cross Country Championship.

The Shelbyville Cross Country team placed 2nd overall in the girls 2 mile run and the Tenaha Cross Country team took 1st place in the boys 5K run. Both teams are state qualifiers and will compete in the Cross Country State Championships Friday, November 3rd and Saturday, November 4th in Round Rock, Texas.

October 24, 2023 - Shelbyville Dragons Varsity volleyball game vs Gary has been changed to Thursday, October, 26 at 4:30 in Shelbyville. One game.

The Center Roughriders fell by a 72-27 score at home to the Carthage Bulldogs. The Roughriders are at 5-3 this season and at 2-2 in District 8 4-A2. They will travel to Bullard on Friday, October 27, 2023 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Panthers Stadium. Bullard is at 5-3 this season and 1-3 in District 8. They lost by a 28-21 score at Rusk last week.

Joaquin suffered a lopsided 69-0 road loss to the Timpson Bears last week. They are 1-7 this season and 1-4 in District 11 2A1. Timpson is 8-0 overall and 4-0 in District 11. The Rams will host the West Sabine Tigers on Friday, October 27 at 7.p.m. at Rams Stadium. West Sabine is 3-5, 1-3, they were on a bye week last Friday. The Bears will travel cross-county to Shelbyville on Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Dragons Stadium. The Shelbyville Dragons are 5-2, 3-1 in District 11 2A1. They won last week at San Augustine by a 40-34 score.

The Tenaha Tigers won their 2023 Homecoming over the Cushing Bearkats by a 28-7 score. Their overall record stands at 5-2 and they are at 2-0 in District 10 2A2. They travel to Mount Enterprise on Friday, October 20 for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Wildcats Stadium. The Wildcats are 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference. They won at Alto last week 55-20.
