February 3, 2016 - Over fifty Center Elementary third graders and Center Garden Club members Cherry Jones, Alison Scull, Janette Wittmann, and Carolyn Bounds and two guests, Benita Collard and Jennifer Britt, enjoyed making pinecone bird feeders together on January 19.
The students also learned about the great American naturalist-artist John James Audubon as they viewed and discussed various works from his great classic Birds of America.
In addition, Garden Club provided supplies for the teachers of those third-grade classes with whom they were unable to meet directly so that ALL third graders with the guidance of their teachers could experience the hands-on activity and learn that everyone needs to be a good steward of Nature's creatures.

February 2, 2016 - The Vietnam Peace Accord of 1973 was observed at the Shelby County Courthouse by VFW Post 8904 Veterans and Auxiliary Wednesday, January 27, 2016.
Leading the ceremony was Larry Hume, Post Quartermaster, who recited a history of the accord, which read as follows:
The Paris Peace Accords ended the fighting in Vietnam, it was signed 42 years ago on January 27, 1973 and was followed by the withdrawal of the remaining American troops. The terms of the accord called for a complete cease fire in south Vietnam. It allowed north Vietnamese forces to retain the territory they had captured, release U.S. prisoners of war, and called for both sides to find a political solution to the conflict. As an enticement, the United States, President Nixon offered air power to enforce the peace terms; however, this was stopped in December of 1974 when Congress cut off all military aid to south Vietnam and all was lost.
"More than 58,000 Americans gave their lives in the Vietnam War, and there's still 1,624 missing in action. This is 12 less than there was at this time last year, as our POW/MIA accounting teams continue to search around the world where there are missing Americans," said Hume.
The Vietnam War claimed the lives of nine of Shelby County's own, and their names were read by Post and Auxiliary members Becky Maidic, Mary Fausett, and Mike Langford.
A memorial wreath was hung on the Shelby County Veterans Memorial by U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran Neal Woodfin. Taps was then sounded as presented by Mike Langford.

January 25, 2016 - Album - A great time was had at the Center Volunteer Fire Department's (VFD) annual bingo fundraiser which was held Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the John D. Windham Civic Center. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to purchase new bunker gear for the firemen.
An average price for a set of bunker gear is $1,600. The set includes pants, coat, helmet, boots, gloves, and nomex hood. The protective fire-resistant garments or Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) are worn by firefighters while fighting fires and sometimes while performing other dangerous activities. It is also referred to as turn-out gear. The gear expires after 10 years from the manufacture date. Additional essential equipment are air packs which cost around $2,000 each. The air pack does not expire; however, they are inspected yearly.
The fire department purchased bunker gear 10 years ago through grant assistance and the equipment expires soon. The volunteer fire department has 16 firemen at this time and the department is working on replacing the gear as funds allow.
Rodney Mathews, Chief of Center VFD said, "We really appreciate everyone for coming out to support us and we want to thank all of the businesses that donated to the department for our fundraiser."
Winner of the $500 black out was Matthew Rafferty. The last game winner of the $1,000 blackout was Lizann Burke and grandson Jaxon Goings.
