November 11, 2023 (More Photos) - Center High School recognized eight Veterans during their Veterans Day program on Thursday, November 9, 2023 in the gymnasium. Senior class officers along with the Center High School Band and Mrs. Kerin Curry’s class assisted with the program.
Veterans in attendance were Larry Hume (US Air Force); Mike Langford (US Air Force); John Huffstetler (US Marine); Dean Lester (US Navy Reserve); Mike Wulf (US Army); Derrick Roberts (US Army); Shametra Smith (US Army); and Otis Amy (US Army).
A welcome was given by Class President Sayre Hall followed by Trace Lester leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Center High School band then played our nation's National Anthem, ‘The Star-Spangled Banner.’
A history of Veteran’s Day was read by Brannon Denby. John Ford gave an introduction of American Heroes and asked all veterans in attendance to stand to be recognized. He then read a letter from United States Senator John Cornyn. To read the letter, click here.
Next, Mrs. Kerin Curry’s class did a presentation ‘Veteran - What it Means To Us’ turning veteran into an acronym. Students took turns holding up a poster for each letter while another student described what each letter represented: V -- Victory; E -- Encouragement; T -- Tough; E -- Educate; R -- Resolve; A -- Appreciate; N -- Never (Never forget our veterans who have served and paid the ultimate sacrifice.)
The grand finale of the program was a special performance of ‘America, The Beautiful’ by Mr. James Brown followed by closing remarks by Whitley Youngblood.
November 8, 2023 - The Center Garden Club honored veteran Kevin Gratehouse during their Wednesday, November 8 meeting in advance of Veterans Day this coming Saturday. Gratehouse served in the United States Marine Corps rising to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant E-7 before retiring after 20 years of service to our county.
Garden Club members gathered before their meeting at the Blue Star Memorial which is located in the flower bed at the Community House on San Augustine Street in Center, Texas. The Blue Star Memorial Marker was installed in November of 2010 after the Center Garden Club voted to adopt the “Blue Star Memorial Highway Program” of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. to honor the men and women of the Armed Forces that have defended the United States of America. The name was chosen for the star on flags displayed in homes and businesses denoting a family member serving. The Shelby County marker was sponsored by the Center Garden Club in cooperation with the City of Center.
While gathered at the Community House, Gratehouse was presented a gift to honor his years of service. Afterwards the club held their meeting at the AgriLife building and enjoyed a meal along with their honored veteran guest.
November 6, 2023 - Veterans Day, November 11, is a time for all Americans to pay their respects to those who have served our country. One day to stand united in respect for ALL veterans, past and present. We celebrate and honor America’s Veterans for their patriotism, love of country, willingness to serve, and sacrifice for the common good.
Traditionally, Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 does not hold a program on this day. Instead, we join with the local schools that are hosting an event to honor this day.

- Thursday, November 9 at 10am - Center - Center HS Gym. Veterans should report to the cafetorium by 9:45am. At 10am they will enter the gym as a group and sit in special seating.
- Thursday, November 9 at 10am - Timpson - Timpson ISD Event Center. Complimentary lunch for Veterans to follow in HS Library.
- Friday, November 10, 8:15 to 8:40am - Tenaha - Come and go event, Breakfast with Veterans in the Tenaha ISD Cafetorium to honor our local Veterans for their service.
- Friday, November 10 at 9am - Joaquin - Joaquin HS Gym. Special seating for Veterans. A breakfast reception for Veterans and Families follows in the HS Library. Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen awards will be presented by VFW Post 8904.
- Friday, November 10 at 9am - Shelbyville - Third grade students will host the program in the Shelbyville ISD cafetorium. Try to arrive by 8:45am..
- Monday, November 13 at 9am - Center Elementary - Center Elementary Gym. Report to the office as you come in the front door, and you will be escorted to the gym for special seating.
We encourage every citizen of Shelby County, especially military veterans to join us in attending one or more of these programs. The students put in a lot of time and effort to make our local veterans feel special and if you’ve never attended you will be glad you did.
November 4, 2023 - It's fall back time... Sunday, November 5th at 2am, daylight savings time ends and clocks roll backward 1 hour.
At the beginning or end of daylight savings time is a good time to do a routine check of items in your house. Test items such as smoke detectors and install new batteries to help keep your family and home safe. Check your hot water heaters and other areas which aren't seen regularly.
Clean out dryer vent hoses which can become clogged with lint and cause dryers to not perform as well. Lint is highly combustible and decreased airflow can cause overheating of the exhaust ducting resulting in a fire. After inspecting and cleaning out the dryer vent ducting, check to make sure when you push the dryer back in place that the duct doesn't have a bend causing poor air flow.
Lastly, annual checkups for pets is great too!

November 4, 2023 (More Photos) - The 10th annual Halloween in the Hole brought families from all over Shelby County to enjoy a safe and fun trick-or-treat experience. The candy line-up extended from the Center High School baseball park around to the F.L. Moffett building and back into the parking lot and almost all they way to Roughrider Stadium.

November 3, 2023 - The James-Antioch Fundraiser held last Saturday was a huge success. We want to thank everyone who came out and supported this event. We particularly want to thank our sponsors, Tyson Foods, Boo Klein, H&S Discount Foods, Brookshires, and Boles Feed for their contributions.
A big thank you to all who helped in the organization and preparing the food for this event.
November 2, 2023 - The Center Woman’s Reading Club met October 5, 2023 in the fellowship hall at First Methodist Church. President Alease Copelin led the business meeting and reminded members that the club members could bring books to the next few meeting to donate to the Center Police Department for its Blue Santa program to be given out as Christmas gifts.
The club members enjoyed a delicious luncheon by program hostess Dottie West. The refreshments and a time of fellowship were enjoyed by all.
Following the business meeting program leader Angie Davis presented a book report on this novel Moon Lake. Joe Lindale wrote the novel that is classified as a southern gothic murder mystery. He has written over 40 novels with several adapted for television. There are many references and settings in East Texas where he currently resides in Nacogdoches. in addition to being a prolific writer, he also teaches at SFASU and teaches self defense.
Moon Lake’s main character is Daniel Russell who was only 14 years old when his father tried to kill them both by driving his car with them inside into Moon Lake. Daniel survived but was left an orphan with the earlier death of his mother and now with the death of his father. As a boy, he believed he was rescued by a mermaid who was really Ronni Canale whose family took in Daniel to live with her family until his Aunt June arrives.
As man adult Daniel returned to Moon Lake to put to rest memories he had of that tragic day only to discover something even more shocking in the wreckage.

October 30, 2023 - The staff and Friends of the Library of the Fannie Brown Booth Memorial Library in Center would like to thank all the workers who volunteered their time to make this book sale a success. We would also like to thank everyone who made donations of books and our customers who bought them. We hope everyone had a great time and got lots of good books to read.
We would like to remind everyone that we still need workers to take down everything on Tuesday, October 31.

October 28, 2023 (Photo Album) - The 6th Annual Fall Festival of Hope, presented by Boo's Battle Support Fund, drew attendees and participants from all over Texas and Louisiana on Saturday, October 28 to the downtown Center square.
The main fundraiser of the festival for Boo's Battle Support Fund was the live auction which raised nearly $9,000. The top three items to be auctioned were a Henry Rifle which sold for $1,650; a Rose Gold Glock which sold for $1,150; and a pair of rocking chairs and small table from White Cottage which sold for $1,000. Thank you to everyone who donated items for the auction as well as to those who bid.
During the festival, J.P. Sledge spoke to festival goers giving his testimony of fighting cancer and the importance of having testing done. Early Detection is one of the most powerful weapons we have against cancer. Make an apppointment and don't put it off.
Seventeen teams for a total of 34 participants competed for prize money in Cornhole tourney totaling $1,000. Pancakes were flying as tossers showed their skills against the tough competitors. Out of towners made the trip to Center worthwhile by taking the top spots. The cornhole results are below along with the Halloween costume contest and the motorcycle show winners.

About Boo's Battle Support Fund
Boo's Battle Support Fund was started by the family of Brandi Mills who was diagnosed in February of 2015 with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer at the age of 28. She passed away in June of 2017. They named the non-profit organization they started after Brandi's nickname 'Boo.' All funds raised go to help anyone fighting any type of cancer. October 26, 2023 - It is with great pleasure that we announce Emma Lewis as the proud winner of the 2023 East Texas Poultry Festival Baked Goods Contest.
Her exceptional chicken-themed cake stole the hearts of judges and onlookers, and it was purchased by Tomlin Insurance, making this victory even sweeter.
This year's contest, held on Friday, October 6, 2023, celebrated the delicious artistry of home bakers, and Emma Lewis certainly stood out. Her cake was a masterpiece, meticulously decorated with a poultry theme that perfectly captured the spirit of the East Texas Poultry Festival.
