“The Scaly-Bark Tree” by Doug Fincher

February 8, 2022 - When I was a teen-ager in Center, Texas, Daddy would take us once a year to Mill Creek to a Scaly-Bark tree. The nuts were smaller and more tasty than larger hickory nuts.

That was a long time ago and I am sure that the tree is gone now. We would fill a toe-sack full and take them home and roast them at the fireplace. They were so tasty that Mother used them (the meat) to bake cakes and cookies with them. That was back in the forties just after The Great Depression.

I am sure that tree has been gone for a long time, but my memories of it is not forgotten and will always remind me of the wonderful days at Mill Creek with our poor… but, very rich… family.
