“Joe’s Squirrel Hotel” (By Doug Fincher)

December 13, 2017 - When my brother Joe (who lives in Orange, Texas) phoned last night, he explained why I hadn’t heard from him lately. “I’ve been building a “Squirrel Hotel” for two baby squirrels that fell from their nest during the recent Harvey Storm.” “I’ve fed them Half nd Half every four hours for several weeks now”, he said. “When they outgrew their small cage, I decided to build a large pen for them.”  “They’re eating solid food now, but couldn’t fend for themselves out in the woods”.

Joe’s hotel has all the elements to make his squirrels (Harvey and Jim) happy.  Their warm boxes will keep them both warm and dry in the most inhospitable weather. “Instead of my squirrels wanting to get out, the wild ones will probably want to get in with them.”  “They’d love to have a balanced meal with my little squirrels every day”, he laughed. When I asked him what the white rags were for that hung under their boxes, he said they love to swing on them.  “I have the rags attached to a wire hooked to the bottom of their boxes”.

It had begun raining as I talked to Joe on the phone.  “Nor a drop of rain will ever get on my babies”, he said. “And since they’ll sleep like babies every night…..……… I will, too”
