Center Woman’s Reading Club Highlights Books that Make an Impact

November 10, 2021 - The Center Woman’s Reading Club met on Thursday, October 21st at the FUMC fellowship hall.

Club member and this year’s president, Mary Lynn Tinkle presented reports on two books she read in 8th grade that made an impact on her life.

The first presentation was 'The Hidden Staircase' by Carolyn Keene. It was the 2nd book in the Nancy Drew series. There are 64 Nancy Drew books. Nancy Drew was an amateur sleuth with qualities that were not typical of a young girl in the 60’s. She grew up with her father and a housekeeper – no mother. She was conservative. Armed with her determination, problem solving skills and a flashlight, Nancy Drew solved many many mysteries. For Mary Lynn and thousands of young girls, she was a true role model.

Mary Lynn’s second report was about 'Black Like Me' by John Howard Griffin. Black Like Me is an extraordinary book about racism. Griffin, a Texas native, went through a rigorous process to have his skin temporarily darkened to he could truly pass as a black man. He traveled for six weeks throughout the racially segregated states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia to explore life as a black man. For Mrs. Tinkle, a white middle class girl, it made quite an impact on her, for life.

Guests are always welcome. Please contact the club membership coordinator, Monty Jones, at 936-598-5757 if you are interested in visiting the club.
