Stanley Walker city editor of New York Herald Tribune 1928-1935

November 13, 2023 - The Center Woman’s Reading Club met November 2 at the First Methodist Church fellowship hall. President Alease Copelin opened the meeting welcoming club members, associate members, and guests. Everyone enjoyed a New York City style luncheon prepared by program hostess and program leader Janene Walker.

President Copelin announced that the next meeting will be at the Fannie Brown Booth Memorial Library November 16 at 12 noon. The program will be presented by librarian Sandra Davis who will discuss library programming and exciting changes and updates coming to the library in the new year. The Center Woman’s Reading Club has been a long supporter of the library and its many literacy opportunities and programs.

The reading club continued its Texas Authors series with a program on Stanley Walker’s City Editor presented by Janene Walker. Born in Lampasas County, Walker established himself as an archetypical city editor during his years at the New York Herald - Tribune newspaper, one whose views became required reading in some journalism schools. The Texas Institute of Letters annually presents the Stanley Walker Memorial Award for literary excellence in Texas daily and weekly newspapers.
