On this date in 1564, a baby boy was born in Pisa, Italy. His name was Galileo Galilei. He would grow to be perhaps the greatest scientific figure in history. Albert Einstein called him the “Father of Modern Science”. Galileo laid foundations in mathematics, physics, engineering, and the scientific method. But, perhaps, he is most remembered for his groundbreaking discoveries in the field of astronomy. When NASA prepared a spacecraft to explore the planets, they named it “Galileo”.
Galileo’s work often put him at odds with the church. His belief that the earth was not the center of the universe, but revolved around the sun, ran counter to what the church felt were biblical teachings. Galileo was brought to trial before the brutal “Inquisition”, and spent the last ten years of his life in prison. He looked up at the heavens, saw the truth, and paid the price for it.
I’m reminded of a story about a little girl who also looked up at the heavens. One night, after supper, she went for a walk with her father. It was already dark, and so she held tightly to her dad’s hand. As she looked up at the beautiful night sky, at the thousands and thousands of stars, she said, “Daddy, if it’s this beautiful on the wrong side of heaven, how beautiful must the right side be!”
