David’s Daily Devotion for Feb. 3

February 3, 2022 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, February 3.

Musician Buddy Holly was born in Lubbock, Texas in 1936. And on this day in 1959 he was riding in a small plane, along with singers Ritchie Valens and J. P. Richardson, on their way to a concert. The plane crashed into a lonely, frozen, Iowa cornfield. All were lost. Buddy Holly was just 22 years old. Perhaps no other popular musician has had such an impact in so short a time.

Holly's band, "The Crickets", were the template for what a rock and roll band would be - two guitars, a bass, drums. And their name was the inspiration for another quartet - maybe you've heard of them . . . "The Beatles". Holly had numerous hit songs, including - "Peggy Sue", "True Love Ways", "Oh Boy", "It's So Easy", "Rave On" - just to name a few. But his big break came with a song called "That'll Be the Day".

Buddy Holly, like many popular musicians, was greatly influenced by gospel music. He wrote "That'll Be the Day" in 1956, and just a year before - in 1955 - everybody was tuning their radios to the gospel hit "What a Day That Will Be". It isn't much of a stretch to wonder if that song about heaven might have been an inspiration for Buddy Holly. God works in mysterious ways. Here's some lyrics from that great gospel song.

What a day that will be when my Jesus I shall see
And I look upon His face, the One who saved me by His grace
When He takes me by the hand and leads me through the promised land
What a day, glorious day that will be!

Meet you back here tomorrow,

Bro. David
