David’s Daily Devotion for June 29

June 29, 2023 - Good Morning!  It's Thursday, June 29.

On this day in 1613, William Shakespeare's Globe Theater burned to the ground.  That, as we know, was the end of all of Shakespeare's plays, and he's never been spoken of again.  Ridiculous!  Right?  Buildings are temporary, but great art is eternal.

A couple of weeks ago, there was a fire here in Center, Texas.  It destroyed a number of buildings of a major local company.  The staff has begun the long, challenging effort of rebuilding.  And nobody has any doubts that they will be successful, because the strength of this company isn't brick and mortar and steel - it's people.  Strong people, with a vision for the future.

Often, we use the word "church" to denote a place.  "Where is your church?", "She's down at the church", "Our church needs a new roof".  That definition comes from the Old English word "cirice", which actually means "a place to worship".  But when we go back to the New Testament, we find the Greek word "ekklesia", a word that's not about a place, but about a people.  And that Church can never be destroyed!

Meet you back here tomorrow,

Bro. David
