David’s Daily Devotion for May 28

May 28, 2022 - It’s Saturday, May 28.

This coming Monday, all across America, communities will be gathering... to remember. Here in Shelby County Texas we’ll meet at 11am at our Civic Center. There will be solemn ceremony and there will be uplifting patriotic music.

One particular song, “The Last Full Measure,” will be sung by our Mayor Pro Tem, Leigh Porterfield. It’s an inspiring song that'll be “worth the price of admission” (which, by the way, is free!). The title draws its inspiration from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, a speech that the president delivered in 1863 at the opening of a soldier’s cemetery.

In Lincoln’s day, political speeches routinely lasted for an hour or more. The Gettysburg Address was preceded by a two-hour oration by Senator Edward Everett. And then, Lincoln strode to the podium, spoke 271 words, taking less than two minutes, and gave us one of the most famous speeches in history. And near the end he famously honored those who “gave the last full measure of devotion.”

We’ll honor them again this coming Monday. If you’re one of our local readers, I invite you to join us. And if you’re one of our “long distance” readers, I urge you to attend an event in your area. As we come together as Americans... to remember.

Meet you back here on Monday,
Bro. David
