David's Daily Devotion for April 18

April 18, 2023 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, April 18.

Did you grow up reading a daily newspaper? I pose that question in the past tense because, for the majority of Americans, a daily newspaper, delivered to their home, is a thing of the past. I grew up in Houston where there was once three major dailies. The Herald and the Post are gone now, only the Chronicle survives, in a reduced format.

My favorite was the Houston Post. It began way back in the 1880’s. The famed short story writer, O. Henry (“The Gift of the Magi”) was a Post reporter. I was not only a faithful daily reader, I was also a “paper boy”, delivering the news well into my college years.

The Post closed its doors in 1995, ten years after I left Houston. In the last 20 years, one third of American newspapers have gone under, and only half of the biggest 100 are still true “dailies”. Most Americans get their news online. I have an app for The New York Times, but it’s not the same.

A long, proud history is quickly passing away, which reminds me of a promise in a favorite verse -

The grass withers, and the flowers fade, but the Word of God endures forever. Isaiah 40:8

Meet you back here tomorrow,
Bro. David
