Do you know the name Karl Barth? He is considered, by many, to be the greatest Christian theologian of the 20th century. He influenced Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Reinhold Niebuhr. Pope Paul called him the greatest theologian since Thomas Aquinas. Google some of these names and your brain will never return to its original size.
Barth put his faith into action during the 1930's when he was teaching in Germany. He was one of the few leaders of the Church to publicly stand against Adolf Hitler and Naziism. In 1962 Time Magazine put Karl Barth on its cover. Can you imagine a national magazine giving its cover to a theologian in 2024?
That same year, Barth was delivering a lecture at the University of Chicago. At the close of his talk, a student rose and asked the question, "Professor, can you take the entirety of your theological and doctrinal philosophy and put them in a single sentence?" The old man paused and then responded," Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so."
