David's Daily Devotion for June 14

June 14, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Friday, June 14.

Happy "Flag Day"! I hope you're flying Old Glory somewhere around your house today. As I write this, there are flags all over our town. On Flag Day 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower signed a declaration that altered the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. The pledge was originally written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, a Baptist preacher, who wanted to instill a stronger sense of patriotism in the minds and hearts of American children. That year marked the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America, and on Columbus Day 10,000 school kids recited the new pledge in unison. That must have been a truly inspiring moment.

The pledge remained pretty much in its original form for the next 62 years. Congress officially accepted it during World War II, and then in 1954, the supreme commander of the war, General Eisenhower - now US President - declared that two new words should be added to the old pledge. And he created the only pledge that most of us have ever known.

And so, on Flag Day 2024, we stand once again, and place our hands over our hearts, and recite together - "one nation UNDER GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all!"

Meet you back here on Monday,
Bro. David
