David's Daily Devotion for May 19

May 19, 2023 - Good Morning! It's Friday, May 19.

One way to chart where you are in your life is the kind of questions that people ask when they run into you. As a young adult it's often, "Do you have a photo of your new baby?". Before long it's, "How's your son doing in college?", and then, "Do you have a photo of your new grandchild?", followed closely by, "How's retirement treating you?", and finally, "How's the arthritis?". But there's a period early on when the typical question is, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

This Sunday is Senior Day at First Baptist Church of Center, Texas. No, not senior adults - but a day to honor our graduates. A day to recognize those young people who are on the threshold of adulthood - who are about to find out what they're going to be when they grow up.

Do you feel grown up? Life has a way of encouraging us to grow up - through marriage, and children, and career, and mortgages. God encourages us to mature in the faith as well. In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul says, "When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I thought as a child, I reasoned like a child. But, when I became a man, I put away childish things."

But the Bible seems to teach that growing up is a lifetime pursuit. In 2 Peter 3:18, we are urged to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ". And so, like most things, growing in the faith is a process. Some call this process "sanctification". Getting up every morning and giving Him control. Opening our mind and spirit to His wisdom and guidance. Becoming a little bit more like Jesus each day. It's a journey. And we take comfort in the words of Philippians 1:6 - "He who began a good work in you, is faithful to complete it..."

Meet you back here on Monday,
