David's Daily Devotion for November 28

November 28, 2023 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, November 28.

On this day, in 1974, John Lennon performed for a sold-out crowd at New York City's Madison Square Garden. That's not very surprising - Lennon was a natural born performer. What is surprising, astounding really, is the fact that this would be his last public performance. In 1980, a psychotic fan ended his life. But for the last six years of his life, he didn't do the thing that he was born to do, he didn't share his music with the world.

Have you ever heard the expression, "people are born with a god-shaped hole in their heart"? In the famous 3rd chapter of Ecclesiastes (To everything there is a season), King Solomon tells us that "God has set eternity in our hearts". In other words, we are born with a longing for the transcendent, for something outside ourselves. Solomon spent a lifetime searching, a lifetime trying to fill that "hole", denying what he was born to do. And, in the end, as he wrote Ecclesiastes, he found "vanity, vanity, all is vanity". Today, we might use words like meaningless, unfulfilling, empty.

King Solomon was a seeker. I'm pretty sure you're a seeker, too, otherwise why would you be reading a daily devotional? At the end of his great book of wisdom, Solomon says this -

The conclusion, when everything has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.

Meet you back here tomorrow,
Bro. David
