David's Daily Devotion for October 4

October 4, 2023 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, October 4.

A great Shelby County tradition begins tomorrow - Poultry Fest! But, there's a great First Baptist Center tradition that happens again tonight. On the eve of Poultry Fest each year, our church has the honor and blessing of hosting a supper for all the carnival workers. At 5:30 this evening, just off our historic town square, we'll share food and encouragement with all the "carnies".

The life of a carnival worker is a hard life. They travel week after week, from town to town, setting up, tearing down. They endure bad food, cramped living conditions, and suspicious stares. We hope that they look forward to their annual stop here in Center, and to the meal and hospitality that they share with our church family.

The Bible is filled with characters who were wanderers and vagabonds. Old Testament examples include Abraham, a nomad, and Moses, who wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. In the New Testament we find the Apostle Paul, who spent the greater part of his life as a traveling missionary, surviving through the hospitality of others. In I Corinthians 4:11, Paul describes himself as "homeless".

And then there's the famous verse, Matthew 8:20 - "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head". That was Jesus speaking. And so, we are reminded that earthly things are merely things. We're reminded that the security of an earthly home is not as important as the security of a heavenly one.

Meet you back here tomorrow,
Bro. David
