David's Daily Devotion for October 6

October 6, 2023 - Good Morning! It's Friday, October 6.

Today is the second day of our county's annual event, Poultry Fest. All the excitement happens right across the street from our church in our town square and around our historic 1885 courthouse. If you're local, I hope you'll stop by the First Baptist booth between seven and ten tonight - I'll be selling ice cream! And all the profits go toward mission projects.

The production of ice cream, as we know it, didn't begin until the 19th century. But, did you know that King Solomon, nine centuries before Bethlehem, enjoyed icy treats? In Proverbs 25:13 he writes, "like a snow cooled drink at harvest time is a trustworthy messenger to the one who sends him, he refreshes the spirit of his master". When you close your eyes and picture the Holy Land, what do you see? Desert, right? But there are parts that are green and fertile, and there are mountains, and, yes, there is snow. Not most places, and not a lot, but there is snow and ice in the Holy Land. Mount Hermon, just north of the Sea of Galilee, is 9000 feet above sea level, and boasts snow a good portion of the year. During Solomon's time, it is thought that workers would store snow, year-round, in caves and bring it to the royal and to the rich during the hot summer months. The snow may have been mixed with honey for a refreshing cool treat.

Come by and see me tonight, or tomorrow afternoon, and I'll have a refreshing cool treat for you!

Meet you back here on Monday,
Bro. David
