David's Daily Devotion for September 13

September 13, 2022 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, September 13.

On this day in 1965, The Beatles released a new song. It was a simple, lovely ballad. And for the first time in their history, the recording featured only one member of the group - the songwriter, Paul McCartney. It went straight to #1 on the charts. Since then it's been "covered" by over 2000 other artists. And in the year 2000, Rolling Stone magazine voted it the greatest pop song in history. The name of the song? "Yesterday."

The opening lyric goes like this - "Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away." It's typical for humans to look back with fondness on "the old days." This is certainly a popular pastime for anyone over 50 these days. But it's far from just a modern phenomenon. The Bible tells us in Exodus 14 that the Israelites, as they were wandering in the wilderness, decided that they were better off in Egypt - when they were slaves! Wise King Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes 7:10 - "Do not say, 'Why were the old days better than these?' For it is not wise to ask such questions." And in Isaiah 43:19, the prophet instructs us to "forget the former things, do not dwell on the past." That Isaiah passage continues with this inspiring message from God - "See, I am doing a NEW thing!"

It's fine to remember yesterday, but we shouldn't live there. We don't want to miss the fresh, new work that God wants to accomplish in our lives... today!

Meet you back here tomorrow,
Bro. David
