"Letting Our Babies Be Cowboys" by Doug Fincher

April 15, 2024 - Years ago… I received an email from my friend John Gooch saying he’d just returned from a team roping event in Athens, Texas. “While I stood with hundreds of others for the invocation, I realized that this was one sport that has always begun with a prayer,” he said. “Standing with all those men and women with their heads bowed and hats in their hands, took me back to less politically correct times when prayers in public were the norm and not the exception.”

After a hundred and fifty years of God-honoring principles, prayers at public gatherings are now disappearing from our nation. The landmark Supreme Court decisions of the early sixties ruled that even prayers at graduation ceremonies and high school football games are unconstitutional.

Many of our American cowboys have retained a traditional Bible-oriented view on life. Their newly organized “Living for the Brand” Cowboy Church in Athens, Texas is just one more of their straight-shooting-sinners-saved-by-grace churches that is throwing out a rope to lost and lonely doggies. Letting our babies grow up to be cowboys might not be a bad idea after all…

… especially if we want them present in The Last Roundup.
