"Robert Adams Pond" by Doug Fincher

“I’ll make you fishers of men….” Matthew 4:19

January 29, 2024 - Even though this pond was posted and guarded with a shotgun, my brothers and I were able to sneak in and fish it for many years. It’s fat bass and goggle-eyed perch made crawling on our bellies through a pine thicket well worth the trouble. And fortunately, we could see the Caretaker before he could see us.

But after being greeted one morning with a load of bird shot, we decided to do some night fishing. Besides being safer, we could now munch on cold biscuits, nap on the piers and watch “shooting stars” streak the sky. Mr. Adams never knew how severely his bass population dropped while he slept.

Who’d ever thought that a few years later my brothers and I would be lined up waist deep in this pond (with sixty other converts) being baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. I’m sure Mr. Adams caught more fish after our conversion, and there’s no doubt that the farmers in Center soon gathered larger numbers of eggs and realized larger harvests of watermelons and sugar cane, too!

We walked away from Robert Adams Pond that day with a new view on fishing. Now the Lord of the Harvest would add numbers to His Kingdom, too… because now we’d fish for men.
