Sheriff Willis Blackwell Announces Candidacy for Re-Election

December 3, 2015 - I would like to announce my candidacy for re-election for sheriff in the Republican primary of Shelby County.

The past three years have been a learning experience for me to say the least. I pride my department in the professionalism they have demonstrated with all people of the county. They work long hours for very little pay and do not receive many rewards. Without them, my job as sheriff would be much more difficult.

During the past three years the department has answered some 35,000 calls for service not to mention the radio calls and individuals walking in for service. We have recovered over $922,500 in property for victims of crime in Shelby County.

We treat all citizens of all nationalities; young or old with respect and impartial treatment, whether a victim or an accused person. We enforce the law the same no matter who you are.

The department has continuously saved the county money in our yearly budget, never coming close to spending all that is allowed. In the coming years we will be forced to consider a new jail facility due to overcrowding and age of the existing building. Jail standards dictates these requirements to the county.

We have worked well with the courts, other county officials and all other law enforcement agencies. I try to keep the public informed about any and all situations in the county – good or bad. It is your right to know what is going on in your county.

The youth of our county continues to be a top priority. Our jail program is in its second year. We allow and encourage all local and surrounding schools to schedule a time for students to tour the facility.
The program has been very successful with junior high and high school students. One on one tours are also available for parents or guardians of children who need a more in-depth understanding of what life is like behind bars.

Drugs and theft are top priorities. The county needs strong prosecutors and judges to make the difference. We are successful in getting these individuals arrested and making solid cases against them but without strong prosecutors and courts, we are spinning our wheels.

Vote wisely this election year. Elect individuals in office to run your county with honesty and integrity.

We have made a lot of progress over the last three years. Let's continue to move forward the next four.

I look forward to serving you, the people of Shelby County, for another term as your sheriff.

Willis Blackwell
Sheriff
