February 15, 2017 - It is that time of year many get the itch to plant a backyard vegetable garden. We’ll look at the pictures and dream of bringing in armloads of fresh produce.
But before you begin, let’s talk about your preparations:
February 14, 2017 - Last October, a press release from the Florida Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of screwworms in deer on a wildlife refuge. This local infestation of New World screwworms caused a good bit of alarm for livestock producers as well as wildlife enthusiasts at the very southern end of Florida.
Around these parts, only the very senior ranchers and outdoorsmen may remember the screwworm, also called blowflies, when it was a problem here.
February 10, 2017 - The District 5 4-H Nutrition and Fashion contests were held on February 4, 2017 at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. We had a record number of 4-H’ers enter in the food show, food challenge, nutrition poster, trashion fashion, duct tape designs, fashion storyboard, and fabric/textile creations contests. A special thank you to all our 4-H parents for making this an exceptional experience for the youth of Shelby County.
January 17, 2017 - The Shelby County 4-H Food Project students are busy getting ready for the District Food Contest to be held on February 4, 2017. In November, the Food Project began with educational workshops on Kitchen Safety, Food Safety, Nutrition Basics and Public Speaking. During these workshops, participants practiced the knowledge gained while perfecting their food prep and cooking skills.
January 6, 2017 - Participants from communities all over East Texas can join together to create a healthier East Texas by signing up for the 5th annual Lighten Up East Texas regional weight loss challenge.
January 5, 2017 - While many people think that 4-H is just about raising livestock, nothing could be further from the truth! We have numerous 4-H’ers involved in projects like clothing & textiles, photography, public speaking, shooting sports, etc.
January 5, 2017 - The “Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER)” was revised, updated and was effective October 11, 2015. A major change in the revision now requires ALL food employees to complete an accredited food handlers training program within 60 days of employment, effective September 1, 2016.
