Tidbits of Shelby County History: The International Boundary Line between Texas, United States

July 30, 2020 - The northern and western boundaries of the Republic of Texas were vastly different from present day Texas and included the following areas. From the mouth of the Sabine River north to the 32nd parallel, then due north to the Red River, west to the 100th meridian, north to the Arkansas River and present day Dodge City, Kansas, then west to the headwaters of the Arkansas River near present day Leadville, Colorado and then north to the 42nd parallel, near present day Rawlins, Wyoming.

Shelby County Museum Shares History of Buena Vista, Texas

June 25, 2020 - Buena Vista, Texas (Shelby County) according to the Texas State Historical Association is near the junction of Farm roads 1645 and 2026, twelve miles northwest of Center in northwestern Shelby County. It was originally called “Bucksnort” when it began to form in the early 1830's. It was renamed Buena Vista when it received a post office in 1848. For many years Buena Vista was the second largest town in Shelby County.

Fannie Watson to Speak at Next Shelby County Museum Meeting

October 15, 2019 - The Shelby County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at 2:00 P. M. in the Shelby County Museum on Pecan Street. Mrs. Fannie Watson will be the speaker this month and states that she is certainly not a historian, but she will be delighted to share information about our historic Shelby County Courthouse. She began her teaching career in the Timpson ISD in 1952 and taught there for three years.

Shelby County Historical Society Monthly Meeting

March 19, 2019 - The Shelby County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. in the Shelby County Museum on Pecan Street. Our guest speaker this month will be Mr. Bill O'Neal. Mr. O'Neal is the Texas State Historian and is a well-known author. He has written many books about the history of Texas. He taught history for many years at Panola College.  He will speak to us about East Texan, Audie Murphy, the most decorated War Hero. Everyone is invited to attend.
