2018 East Texas Fruit, Vegetable Conference

August 8, 2018 Overton — The annual East Texas Fruit and Vegetable Conference will offer professional and amateur producers tips on everything from Asian vegetables to figs and fertilizers.

The event will be Aug. 15 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, 1710 Farm-to-Market Road 3053, Overton. There is a $30 fee for individuals and $50 for couples. The deadline to register is Aug. 10. There is an additional $5 charge for late registration.

300 Years of Plants on the Move in Texas

July 11, 2018 - The Southern Garden History Society, along with SFA Gardens, Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc, and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present 300 Years of Plants on the Move in Texas in historic Nacogdoches, Texas Friday and Saturday, October 5 & 6, 2018 to celebrate Texas’ Tricentennial in gardening with tours, lectures, a book signing, and a reception. 

Controlled Burn in Arcadia Area Starting March 12th

March 12, 2018 - Greg Grant will be conducting controlled burns on his pine savannas in Arcadia the week of March 12-16, 2018.  In addition to creating a scenic, open, park-like pine forest, regular prescribed fire reduces fuel loads decreasing the chance of catastrophic fires during the summer; controls undergrowth, diseases, and insects; and promotes wildlife habitat for deer, turkey, quail, pollinators, and pine savanna species like brown headed nuthatches, pine warblers, Bachman’s sparrow, and endangered red cockaded woodpeckers.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service to Host Spring Landscape Seminar

March 1, 2018 Tyler - The Smith County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office Environmental Horticultural Committee will be hosting a spring landscape seminar Saturday, April 14, 2018 from 9:00AM to 12:00PM at the HUB, 304 E Ferguson St, Tyler, TX 75702. The program is $15.

Bob Byers, Director, Fort Worth Botanic Garden will present “Imagining a Better Garden; Easy Concepts for Understanding Landscape Design” while Smith County horticulturist Greg Grant will cover choosing plants for your East Texas garden.

Controlled Burn Scheduled for Arcadia

January 27, 2017 - Greg Grant will be conducting a controlled burn in Arcadia on Saturday, January 28th in his loblolly pine savanna. 

In addition to creating a scenic, park-like forest, regular prescribed fire reduces fuel loads decreasing the chance of catastrophic fires during the summer; controls weeds, diseases, and insects; and promotes wildlife habitat for deer, turkey, quail, and pine savanna species like brown headed nuthatches, pine warblers, and endangered red cockaded woodpeckers.

 

Grant Conducts Controlled Burns in Arcadia

January 14, 2017 - Greg Grant will be conducting controlled burns in Arcadia on January 14th and 15th on his tall grass prairie, a new longleaf pine pollinator project, and his loblolly pine savanna.
