March 7, 2023 - Greg Grant will be conducting controlled burns on three different pine plantings in Arcadia this week. Winds will be out of the south during the burns. In addition to creating scenic, open, park-like pine forests and promoting native grasses and wildflowers, regular prescribed fire reduces fuel loads, decreasing the chance of catastrophic wildfires during the summer; controls underbrush, diseases, and insects; and promotes wildlife habitat for deer, turkey, quail, pollinators, and declining pine savanna and grassland songbirds.

Fresh new potatoes are a delectable treat each May.

May 16, 2022 - “Houston, we have a pollinator problem.” And since we, as humans, are 100% of the problem and we, as gardeners, are fully complicit; it’s our duty and obligation to do something about it. And when I say “we,” I certainly include “me,” because I’ve done my damaging part, not intentionally, but in ignorant horticultural bliss.

Our gardens, our neighborhoods, our cities, our farms, and our beloved wild Texas has serious issues that need addressing; now, not later. 

March 15, 2022 - The Smith County Master Gardeners have once again partnered with Tyler’s Carnegie Public Library to offer the “Master Gardeners at the Library” lecture series, focusing on relevant gardening topics for Smith County and the surrounding area.

December 29, 2021 - The annual East Texas Fruit, Nut and Vegetable Conference, Friday, January 14 at the Cross Brand Cowboy Church (11915 FM 2015, Tyler, Texas 75708) will offer both professional and amateur gardeners tips on blackberries, blueberries, fire ants, native fruits and nuts, pecan grafting, peppers, and tomatoes.
