News from Paxton Methodist, June 29

June 29, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother Jesus, Amen. I was a no-show for church on Father’s Day. It is pretty bad when the preacher does not show up on Sunday. I got sick and was sicker on Sunday. I have felt bad all this past week, but my headaches have abated some. Last Sunday was Father’s Day, which was the theme of my sermon. So even though this was the Sunday after Father’s Day, I gave the sermon I had prepared for that special Sunday. Next Sunday will be July 5th and part of that sermon will be a celebration of our nation’s Independence Day.

News from Paxton Methodist, June 15th

June 15, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother Jesus, Amen. Sunday was the 2nd Sunday after Pentecost. In some Christian traditions, we are entering Ordinary Time. The great religious days and festivals are behind us, and we are enjoying sunshine and warmer temperatures. These last few days have been nice—lower humidity really does make a difference. Today was also Flag Day. This special patriotic day, a symbol of freedom and our national identity, is always June 14.

June 8, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother Jesus, Amen. Sunday was Trinity Sunday, the day on the Christian calendar set aside to celebrate the doctrine of the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The idea of the Trinity is certainly mysterious and is really beyond my comprehension. As our affirmation in our worship service we used the Nicene Creed, one of the oldest creeds.

May 25, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother Jesus, Amen. Sunday was the Seventh Sunday of Easter. We are at the end of the fifty days between Easter and Pentecost. Traditionally Christians celebrated the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven this past week. We modern people no longer look at the universe as three-tired, but there is no doubt what Luke was talking about when he spoke of the ascension of Jesus.

May 11, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. Sunday was the Fifth Sunday of Easter. It was also Mothers’ Day. We hope that all the mothers, grandmothers, and those special women who helped raise us had a wonderful Mother’s Day. Paxton United Methodist is still not having in-church worship. We are going to look at how the pandemic is progressing (or not) and make a weekly decision. We will of course listen to our bishop and our district superintendent.

News from Paxton Methodist April 26th

April 27, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. Sunday was the third Sunday of Easter. We certainly had plenty of rain at our house this week. Last Sunday we had 4 inches in our rain gauge; on Wednesday we had 6 inches! Needless to say, that was way too much in a short time. Sue and I live just a couple of houses from downtown Joaquin on Highway 84, where the highway flooded. The road behind town was washed away, so the city crews have to reinstall the huge culverts. Until then that road is closed.

News from Paxton Methodist, April 20

April 20, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. Sunday was the 2nd Sunday of Easter. Weatherwise, this has been a typical East Texas week. We had some cooler than usual temperatures, which really isn’t that uncommon for Eastertime in East Texas. We also had temperatures flirting with the eighties—not to mention rain this weekend. I hope that everyone is being safe and staying home as much as possible. Working in my gardens and yard has helped me keep my sanity. My gardens in the front and back are so pretty right now. But they are ready for some rain!

News from Paxton Methodist, April 5th

April 5, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. Sue and I continue to stay at home. Paxton United Methodist Church has canceled Sunday School and Worship Services through April and will reevaluate once again at the end of the month. The coronavirus appears to be getting worse, and we are told it will continue to spread for quite awhile. Sue has been busy cleaning out closets, clearing out files, and cleaning out her desk. She has also been cooking up a storm.
