News from Paxton Methodist, March 29

March 29, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. We are certainly living in strange and in some cases, trying times. Most of us are sheltering in place and trying to avoid people as much as possible. The medical professionals are telling us this is the only way to flatten out the curve and get a handle on this pandemic. The United States now has more cases than any other country in the world. After first ignoring the problem, we are trying to catch up and ramp up to handle the pandemic in the coming weeks and maybe even months.

March 22, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. What strange times we are living in! Our thoughts, hopes, and prayers are that everyone is well and coping with the “new normal” way of life. It is so important that we listen to and follow what the scientists and leaders think is the best way to protect ourselves from the coronavirus. In keeping with that, Paxton United Methodist Church did not have Sunday School or worship Sunday and will not next Sunday. We will evaluate where we are in another week and then make decisions based on that.

March 16, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! On the Christian calendar, Sunday was the Third Sunday in Lent. It has certainly been a strange week on Planet Earth. Who would have thought a month ago that the whole world would be in lockdown! Who would have thought that a virus would cause a state of emergency to be declared in the United States! I always figure that out here in the sticks we wouldn’t be affected by things that trouble urban areas and other parts of our country and world—but who knows.

March 10, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. On the Christian calendar, Sunday was the Second Sunday in Lent. This past week has seen heavy rains and storms, followed by warm days full of sunshine. I guess we can say we saw a typical East Texas winter week. I sure hope everybody remembered to “spring forward.” This is the time of year when I really don’t like Daylight Saving Time, even though I do appreciate that extra hour of light at the end of the day.

March 2, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. On the Christian calendar, Sunday was the first Sunday in Lent. Each Sunday during the Lenten Season is to be seen as a “little Easter.” A great portion of the Gospels is spent on the weeks leading up to Good Friday and Easter. Traditionally, Lent is a time for reflection, perhaps a period to give something up or to add something, like more time spent in prayer. I used to give something up, but this year I didn’t even consider it—maybe I am not as religious as I once was. Maybe I will give up liver!

February 24, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. On the Christian calendar, Sunday was Transfiguration Sunday, the last Sunday of the Epiphany. Wednesday will be Ash Wednesday, and next Sunday will be the First Sunday in Lent. All that has theological importance, but I guess the big question is how modern people and the modern church remember these significant signposts in our world.

News from Paxton Methodist, Feb. 17

February 17, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. Sunday was the Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany. I am still waiting for my computer to be updated; my wife’s computer has viruses, so it takes forever to get something typed and ready to send out. This past Saturday I attended a mandatory workshop in Longview on Sexual Ethics. Many of our area Methodist pastors were there—it was good to catch up with them.

News from Paxton Methodist, February 9th

February 10, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. Sunday was the fifth Sunday after the Epiphany and the second Sunday in February. My computer has been in the shop this past week getting updates and fine tuning. I feel powerless, even though I don’t use my computer except for word processing and the internet. I have most of my church stuff stored on an external drive, so I’m able to plug it in to my wife’s computer. But that is like driving a borrowed car—it just doesn’t feel right.

Happenings at Paxton Methodist, Feb 3rd

February 3, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. Sunday was the 4th Sunday after the Epiphany and the first Sunday in February. As numbers, Sunday’s date is 02-02-2020! During our worship service we celebrated Holy Communion. In February we will be collecting soap and shampoo for Community Christian Services. In January it was tuna; on Wednesday, I took all that we collected to Christian Services. I saw many friends volunteering at the food bank, and several people helped me unload my truck. On Monday, we will head to Focused Care at 10:00 for our ministry there.
