Happenings at Paxton Methodist

October 28, 2019 - Grace and peace from our brother and savior, Jesus, Amen. It is Friday morning, and I am starting on next week’s newsletter and newspaper article. Woke up this morning to rain, rain, rain!  We certainly need the rain, so no complaints here. I tried to coax the puppies out this morning, but Gunter and Sam just looked at me like I was crazy. The only way they will voluntarily go out in the rain is if I take them for a walk and get wet too. I am debating this idea as I write.

October 21, 2019 - Grace and peace from our brother and savior, Jesus, Amen. The past week has been really nice—pleasant temperatures and some much- needed rain. I hope autumn hangs around for a long time—until January or February would be fine by me! Saturday night we got an unexpected rain shower. It didn’t last all that long, but we had an inch in our rain gauge.

October 14, 2019 - Grace and peace from our brother and savior, Jesus, Amen.  Last Friday morning I took my dogs to the park for our morning constitutional.  When we left the house it was about 70 degrees, which felt really nice.  As we were making our laps, the winds picked up and I knew that the temperature was falling.  When we returned home, it was 55 degrees! I guess Mother Nature finally released fall.  Saturday and Sunday we had some winter-like mornings.  I sure hope we have a long autumn full of moderate temperatures.

September 30, 2019 - Grace and peace from our brother and savior, Jesus, Amen. Fall has come but you really can’t tell yet. I am so ready for some cooler weather, but summer just refuses to let go her grip.  Sue and I went to Monroe last Monday to visit Sue’s Uncle Eddie. We had a really good visit; Eddie seems to be doing quite well, although older like the rest of us. Sue’s car is in the shop, meaning we were down to just one vehicle—so I missed Sunday School this morning. We had a nice “crowd” for church (double digits).  We held a business meeting to approve all the reports and

September 17, 2019 - I think most of us are ready for the first day of fall—especially if it will come with cooler temperatures. My computer isn’t acting right but being a Monday morning I might excuse it. We had a good Sunday at Paxton United Methodist Church. Our Sunday school lesson spoke of God as a great mystery. The scripture was Exodus 19: 9-25 and 20: 18-21, where the writer speaks of God in the midst of thunder and lightning. God is enthroned on the mountain; the people are ready to send Moses up to the top as long as they don’t have to deal with the ultimate mystery.

September 10, 2019 - Love and peace from our brother, Jesus.  We are still in the midst of Ordinary Time; we here in East Texas are eagerly looking forward to autumn. Football season is here, but the fall-like temperatures have yet to arrive. Hopefully, it won’t be too much longer. We actually had a brief respite Monday evening in the form of a thunderstorm; unfortunately, some of us also experienced a power outage along with the cooling rain.

September 3, 2019 - Love and peace from our brother, Jesus. Happy Labor Day! Not much going on in downtown Joaquin—not that much ever happens.  It is just plain hot outside. Labor Day used to signal the end of summer and the beginning of school. But kids in Joaquin have been back to work for a couple of weeks—and we’re expecting triple digits this week. Once again, Texas is dealing with a mass shooting.  We are left to wonder what can be done to stop the carnage.

August 26, 2019 - Love and peace from our brother, Jesus. Much of our part of East Texas got some needed rain last week. Sue and I were luckier than most, totaling around an inch. The rain cooled things down for awhile, but the sun came out, bringing the heat and humidity! We are supposed to have a more than decent chance of rain and a couple of cool mornings in the coming days. Those cool mornings will be a foretaste of the fall days to come. August sure is zooming by. Most kids had their first full week already, and others are schoolbound now.

August 20, 2019 - Love and peace from our brother, Jesus. Kids are back in school in Joaquin. That and all the heat advisories show us that we are in the “dog days of summer.” I really don’t know where that saying came from, but I do know that my four-legged friends, Gunter and Sam, don’t like the heat any more than I do. I really appreciate air conditioning and never complain about my electric bill. I have been watering every day, trying to keep my perennial plants, flowers, and fruit trees alive.
